Yeah, they’re awesome to watch. Landings, too, but especially the takeoffs because of the hand signals and everybody working together on the deck.

As the modern aircraft carrier is a British invention*, perhaps a view of British deck operations would a be good addition here. This was back in the 1970s which is the last time the UK had an aircraft carrier. Since then, we've only had "through deck cruisers". I wonder if we'll ever an aircraft carrier again. No, the QE-class boats are not proper aircraft carriers, they're just jumbo sized Invincibles.
Anyway, I love the hand signals given to the just landed aircraft as it clears the gear. Brakes, hook up, airbrakes away and flaps up, wings fold, taxi.

Great videos
HMS Ark Royal was small compared to the US carriers of the day so landing a Buccaneer or Phantom must have been character building.
The front undercarriage Oleo was jacked up on the F4K so it had a higher angle of attack to assist take of from the shorter deck of the UK carriers.

The economics of a carrier are pretty bad unless you really must project force (in which case you don’t really care about the economics). Just like there was an age for battleships, there is an age for carriers and I think it’s ending soon.
Carrier battle groups are also vulnerable to swarms of missiles from someone who has them. Right now they’ve usually been used against nations who do not. As an example, the Iranians have a lot of anti-ship missiles.. of course, opinions vary whether their kitis effective or not.
I also think (it’s kind of obvious...) the future will be mostly unmanned drones in the air and under the surface. Lower amount of casualties, increased efficiency, etc.

It looked pretty hairy to strap the aircraft angled like that to compensate for lower catapult power (I think?) and a shorter deck.

An Aircraft carrier is more symbolic than anything else now. Fantastic feat of maritime engineering.

There a black helo going your way Del, I think you’re about to be “retired” with all those military photos you’ve been posting recently.
