Carrying a 907 Gas Bottle - ideas? |
|
Hi,
Finally got a gas bottle for some camping and evenings at the beach. Was wondering if roof rack mounted is good/bad/indifferent?
I have an ally roof rack that looks like a copy of a front runner (or is a front runner, its second hand ebay) so a specific bottle holder might be possible, but should they always be upright (I assume) or can they go on thier side.
if not that they any goo ideas re internal mounting for occasional use? Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

I've always been told that gas bottle should be carried upright as the liquid gasses off and if not carried upright you can get liquid gas coming through the regulator

They can be transported on their side, but must not be used on their side as you will have a flame 10 foot long It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi,
Propane gas cylinders should NOT be carried on their side but upright.
the pressure safety valve is in liquid and not gas and can not work if its on its side
No idea if the 907 has a pressure safety valve or not

First for me and I’ve used them for 30 years, I have seen one that has exploded and the top has opened up like a tulip flower, they are designed to do that. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I bought one recently through the post, E Bay, and it came in a cardboard carton with no arrows or Keep Upright signs on it so I reckon that must have been manhandled in most positions during transit.
I would not have thought it a very good idea to carry it on a roof rack exposed to sun and varying temperatures.

Hi,
the pressure safety valve operates if the gas pressure gets too high venting the pressure, if its in liquid it does sense the pressure increase and will not operate, most cylinder failures are from cylinders being involved IN a fire rather than being on fire, pressure increases to critical and goes pop at some point of the shell
your right about the liquid as it expands about 30x to gas so a small amount of liquid is a lot of gas
oh and they are designed to be outside, such as skeggy's caravan sites 8) Transit! 2019

The carrier would have been in big trouble along with the seller, a gas bottle should not to be shipped via a conventional carrier, specialist transport required. There was a thread on here recently were a member asked BD to quote, he declined, specialist carrier required.

I've seen that when a security guard at leeds festival years ago, told some teenage campers off for having a gas powered BBQ, one of the idiots tipped the bottle open and lit it with something, 7-8ft flame shot out straight into the face of the security guard
not suprisingly the he got a good kicking for doing that off the security guard.

If carrying on a roof rack surely you could cover it with something to prevent overheating – a foil wrap/blanket thing or something similar?

probably safer on roofrack AND uncovered ... in the event of a vehicle fire it may not get as hot as it would nearer fuel tank and it would be visible so you'd know to run like
