There is no doubt that we live in highly polarised times, but, as a country, do we really have to resort to the highly-charged but below-the-belt jibes and spiteful, personal, attacks that seem to have been normalised over the last few months? It's not sophisticated and, in my humble opinion, is not very British and risks verging on the excesses of the more hot-blooded (i.e., "Mediterranean") cultures.
As a nation, aren't we better than this? I really thought we were. At this rate, there'll be people firing AK-47s into the air and beeping car horns into the early hours - both of which are, if nothing else, bl**dy rude.
Is the culture I love really so lost? 2015 Volvo V40

I'm all for "open debate" rather than suppressing anger over stuff BUT I feel Brexit has released a new level of carp which, like it or not, has allowed a nastiness to pervade our normal way of life.
Perhaps Brexit was itself an issue with stuff being suppressed and not dealt with for too long that when folks got a chance to vote they , IMHO, blindly picked a side that they thought matched their views. As all sensible people should know, the issues of in/out the EU were more like picking a colour from the rainbow than plumping for yes or no.

@ HWN: Out of all of the things that have happened since the world changed in 2016, has something in particular made you feel this way? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

tbh ... the world DIDN'T change. we just had a mis-informed vote on our perceptions of our bit of it.
If I'm being REALLY honest ... I was raised in a very racist environment. but I grew up.

Other things changed in 2016 as well. We got Satan’s gift to diplomacy, Donald Trump. He’s done his level best to normalise “awful” as a way of communicating with others. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

Agreed. It’s not good and (Trump criticism aside) I’m now trying my best not to add to it 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

There has been the cyclical move of politics to populism - we've been here before over the years in various countries - and, more worryingly for me, a move against science/facts/truth. The latter has been assisted by the internet and the growth of conspiracy hypotheses. It will end badly - for example the anti-vaccine movement will result in increasing numbers of dead / crippled children.
If I had children, I would be very worried about the rise of the anti-science movement. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

"When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who's going to die! You don't know who's children are going to scream and burn. How many hearts will be broken. How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: SIT DOWN AND TALK!"

has there ? or it it just lazy politicians ? It's just toooooo easy to jump on a band-wagon and side with the apparent "will of the people" than debate options and formulate policies you can then take back to the voters.
saw the papers were full of "tactical voting" headlines yesterday as if it wasn't a normal part of politics. ffs ... haven't people realised what politics is all about ? when i was a "child" at Liverpool Uni in early 80's , I did lights/sound for a "politics" summer school session that explained in detail how tactical voting was meant to work.

For me there are two big factors.
Increase in social media (including forums) that give people the opinion that their view is important and that it not only should be listened to but followed by all as the leading view in that field. I fully understand my opinion is both irrelevant and no one cares, hence why i dont do social media...unfortunately many dont get that.
second, (and unfortunately it happens on here and for years) that we have lost tolerance of people, that everyone is different and has the right to do what they want...sometimes we wont like it, but their right to do/say/act is more important than our like or dislike. This is also backed up by laws that nanny and increase those who shout loudest (1 above) feeling the world should legalise their view. I use the greenlane issue to keep this linked to cars! Mike

One of the biggest problems is that some people struggle with the concept that others might have a different opinion to their own. They further struggle to understand why somebody cannot see their viewpoint so quickly decide the other person is either plain wrong or foolish or both. This then results in name calling and ridicule that takes everybody back to playground level. Mods:
