Maldives
Three years ago when Sharm shut down, we were struggling to find anywhere to go with great diving, until we stumbled upon Vilamendhoo in the Maldives. What a place, the sea is 15 paces from your front door, water is 30 degrees, probably the best food we’ve had in any hotel, and the dive centre is 50 yards away. Anyone looking for a great place to relax or dive, this is the place to come, big enough that the dive boats run, small enough to be so peaceful, just 180 or so rooms and 25 mins to walk around the whole island.
We are now on our 3rd visit, on surface interval before another dive

Dave,
SWMBO and I were lucky enough to find Vilamendhoo 20 years ago. We did 3 weeks on our first trip, loved it so much we went back a year later for another 3 weeks. We got persuaded to go to a "new" resort Filitheyo for the last week - big mistake - nowhere near as relaxed. Vilamendhoo certainly didn't have the infinity pool when we were there - didn't have any pool, other than the 30 degree one 15 yards from our front door, where we could paddle with the baby black tip reef sharks and rays. Thanks for bringing back some truly awesome memories. Best regards,

Was first there in the early 90s. Loved it, too.
How's the coral there now? Still pretty bleached by the looks of the photos. Haven't been back since 2010.PAGODA

Bleaching is variable, but the life is better than a couple of years ago. It’s probably as much to do with people trampling all over it as much as warming, some people are unbelievableJoined the BMWX5 45e group

I’m not jealous at all ref the diving , nope refuse
the Mrs & I have been going to Hurawalhi for a couple of years now, located in the North.
It has an underwater restaurant, which is an experience in itself.--

Stayed in Kerudu resort last year and previously as well which was doing trips to Hurawalhi and the underwater restaurant but unfortunately stupid money for the trip at around £500 and not that keen on sea food. Also stayed at The Lux in south ari atoll (not the new one in the north) for swmbo's 50th that was very nice but cost the price of a small mortgage
Love the Maldives but cattle class is a killer form Manchester will have to save for business class again before any next journey if ever!D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

We go cattle class but book the exit seats, 6ft of leg room just about does, and a ring to sit on as well, makes a huge difference Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I always sit on my ring Dave
Seems most cattle class planes now have 3 rows at the windows and they are really narrow so if you get a slightly more rounder person sitting next to the two of us they overspill into our area and for 13hrs gets a little too much. Not to mention getting past for a toilet visit!D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

Have done Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa (Gan) - not worth the extra flight hassle unless you have an interest/history in Gan.
Also Maafushivaru - not great.
Komandoo is our resort of choice with many visits over the years. Children not welcome though. Diving is good I am told.
the first time we went, we originally planned on Komandoo, precisely because they don't allow children. we then happened to see Hurawalhi, also adults-only. --

Vilamendoo has an adults only section, villas, beach and restaurant. We are skin flints so just along from that and never really bothered at all.
Same pic as above with a bit of colour correction

I thinks Komandoo is the sister island of Keredu island resort. We have stayed their twice and it consists of 3 resorts in one. A central hub for all the action and has no age restriction if you stay in this part or at one end of the island is the O Resort for 16+ or our favvorite end where we stayed in water villas is the Sangu resort 18+ we have enough with kids and grandkids at home thanks D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo
