Oil level not available

Tried to check the oil level on my D4 and it says "not available" next to the level indicator. Tried the 2 pushes on the cancel button and even left it overnight but still not available.

Is this a sign the level sensor is knackered? Scary if so as there are no other warnings and nothing to say the level sensor isn't working

Do you wait for approximately 13-15 minutes after the engine has reached operating temperature and the car is switched off on level ground?

It should work instantly if you have left it over night and haven’t started the engine.

I assume you don’t have the engine running?

I would try a 13-15 minutes window because at this time I always get results. At 10 minutes I get the same message, 3 minutes later I get a reading.

I don't if outside temperature makes any difference as the sensor waits for the oil to go down in the cardan.

Could the low battery play a part.

I've just checked & I don't get a low battery light when checking the oil level.

Maybe a decent long charge might help?

I get the battery light when I check the oil (which I normal, battery light is always on while car is in ignition ON, even with a new battery)

But I don't get the yellow warning box, which should be a different error? This is how my reading looks like:

Yes. Just had it plugged in on a mates iid tool and it measured 0. But said there was 6+ litres in. So looks like the level sensor is knackered
Ordered a new one for next week. But at least I am happy knowing it has some oil in till then Rolling Eyes

Yep bonnet open, door open. Every possible variation. My old D4s would show level after about 10-15 mins with no problem.

The IID tool also showed a live fault on the oil level circuit that wouldn't clear so first port of call is a new sensor.

IID Gave 2 readings

engine oil level 0.0mm engine oil volume 6.5l

The yellow triangle warning may have been because the door and bonnet were open on mine??

Sorry Russell but you do need the bonnet open if you want to check the level out of standard parameters. In cases where you go to check and it says not available (checked too soon after stopping, too late since, not level ground etc), the trick where you press cruise control cancel button twice requires the bonnet open to work. I had this exact issue on the weekend. Bonnet down, no go, open bonnet, fine.

The bonnet open method is the dealer work around. The tech doesn’t want to be waiting 15 minutes to check the oil the way us mere mortals do. I can see why LR put a time on it as not everyone is car savvy, and if it read low after the engine has run, some, such as an ex work colleague would fill it up. Said work colleague brimmed the oil and then wondered why it ran like xxxxx. Black smoke, no power, burning smell....we dropped 5 litres of oil out of it before it read max. Luckily it was a new 1.6 petrol focus so no one could tell once the oil level was correct again.
