Disco3 - Long list of repairs - Advice |
|
Hi All,
So I have had my Disco in for a service and have the (depressing) result of a long £3.5K+ list of repairs that need to be done.
Discovery 3 2005 Auto - Currently on 135,000 miles.
I have a couple questions (Sorry if any are obvious or silly)- I will split it up to hopefully make clearer.
Attached is a full list.
***Note I don't have the £3.5K lying about at the moment so trying to make this work in smaller chunks of work.
--------------------------
BRAKE PADS FRONT
BRAKE DISKS FRONT
BRAKE WEAR SENSOR FRONT
BRAKE DISC REAR D3
BRAKE PAD SET REAR
BRAKE WEAR SENSOR REAR
**** Question about the brakes - Do I need to need to replace both front and rear at the same time?
I wouldn't mind giving the fronts a shot myself and rears done by my local (as i want the hand brake serviced as well)****
---------------------------
OIL COOLER INC OIL FILTER
**** They didn't mention anything wrong with this during the service... Do the oil cooler's need to be replaced after a certain interval?
---------------------------
TRACK ROD COMPLETE L/H
SUSPENSION ARM FRONT L/H LOWER
SUSPENSION ARM FRONT R/H LOWER
SUSPENSION ARM REAR R/H UPPER
**** Is it a bad idea to replace track rod + front lower suspension arms and leave rear for another day?[/list]

You could sort out the brakes both back and front yourself for a few hundred quid including discs.
if fact all you're list is do-able DIY, time to roll up your sleeves
only thing I would be paying labour for there is a 4 wheel alignment when all the work is done
Do you have a leak at the oil cooler?
There are plenty write ups on here on how to replace everything on your list.
These are moneypits if you need a garage to do the basics
Good luck, get the sleeves up

Get onto Advanced Factors website and get pricing the stuff you need, £3.5k does sounds a lot for that, search for Bodsys brake bible, it will tell you all you need to know for front and back.
Looks like all of that is DIY as Sea Raider says.
If you cant do then get a proper indy to do, should be way less I would have thought Joined the BMWX5 45e group

As Dave T - get a good local Indy to price it for you, if you can't or don't want to do it yourself. Just make sure that quality parts are used so you get the max life out of the work done.

Whatever you do use a decent recommended Indy, not a JLR franchisee.
Presumably the belts have been changed as required, twice I believe for a 14 year old car & the oil pump ?

As an idea of what you can pay for brake parts when you shop around, for my 2012 RRS 5.0 SC rear brakes, I paid £54 for genuine LR boxed discs (marked as Brembo which is odd as they are TRW callipers), £90 for EBC red stuff pads and I think it was £50 for EPB shoes and fitting kit. The sensor wire was £15 but returned as it wouldn’t fit correctly and I reused the undamaged original. So I did the rears for a few notes south of £200.

according to LR Fixed price servicing for a D3 the front discs/pads/sensors are £275 all in and the rear is £385 all in
Im sure a decent indy can come in cheaper than that as well.
im led to believe the suspension arms are bolt off/bolt on pretty much but ive not looked at those myself.
so where your garage got £3.5k from i have no idea

brakes can be done seperatly front / rear. Almost preferred, so that one end can bed in.
You may want to verify whether discs are really required, (i.e is there a big lip on edge) or are they just wanting to replace them as that what garages like to do these days.
I wouldn't bother with rear discs myself, unless there was a good reason.
Wear sensors only required if the dash light ! is on. and to be honest, if you are on a budget you could just the wires and join! (esp the rear one) Expensive for what they are.
You could inspect the pads to see how much wear material is left.
Front brakes are the most important.
If you start messing with the rear brakes, you may find you require new calipers within a month (if they stick on). They are about £45 each + fitting

If it has oil in the coolant then perhaps that is the reason for the oil cooler, as they can leak.

You may find that wherever you took it to just looked up a list that said what needs to be done at that mileage but that does not mean it needs to be done. I would inspect myself first. That list of yours is a relatively easy set of tasks as long as you have some mechanical aptitude and the tools.

I'd say they priced it that high because it reflects the going rate for main dealer time in Berkshire. Plus, all those latte's and comfy sofas don't pay for themselves you know.
I'd echo some of the comments above. A lot of the list (particularly the brakes) are relatively easy to do yourself with some simple tools, and a lot cheaper if you're only paying for the parts. Take a look at Bodsy's Brake Bible and see if you can't save yourself a few bob.

I am in the process of doing most of that.
Have you got some clunking up front?
The lower arms at the front normally clunk when you jab the brakes on at 10mph.
Advanced Factors do a complete front arm set for £216, and if you call them you can get 5% discount code.
Front discs and pad set from £77.
Rear disc and pad set from £67.
Wear sensors £15 for both.
May as well buy their track rod set as well, track rods, track rod ends and all rubber boots for £59.
Front arms will take 2-3 hours, track rods and ends probably 2 hours, brakes front and rear probably 2 hours.
That is a day, and most indi garages will charge you around £80 an hour so £360.
So around £800 all in.
Obviously you need to consider the oil cooler and the rear upper arm, but I would be asking why it needs to be replaced.
The rear upper arm kit, again right and left, is about £150, and maybe 2-3 hours to do.
The car will probably feel a lot tighter when done.
Even doing the lot I bet you could get an indy to do it all for £5-600 if you agree a price first, especially if you say you will supply all new bolts so he can cut the old ones off saving time.

Get your wallet out?
I listed what I have been quoted for the above work, but I have access to a garage, ramp and tools so will do it myself.
However, brakes etc, can always be done on the drive.
