Today I started the D4 at roughly -5 no bother at all the FBH started the vehicle warmed up and defrosted unfortunately at this point I didn’t notice the charge voltage (I have one of those push into aux socket readers) I then shut the vehicle down for an hour ish.
On re start for a journey out at about -3 deg I did notice this time that only 12.1 volts was indicated this fluctuated down to 12 volts and even 11.9 volts if I put the lights on, now getting worried 😟 however I noticed that if I took my foot off the accelerator or put the brakes on the voltage shot up to the normally indicated voltage of 14.5 volts this was the case every time but as soon as brakes were released and or accelerator used the voltage died back to 12.1 volt I had to stop on the journey after 20 or so miles for about an hour during which time the static voltage of 12 volts hadn’t lowered any, I had a look under the bonnet and felt + and - terminals to see if they were loose (maybe bad earth) they didn’t move. However after starting my journey again the voltage had recovered to 14.5 volts and stayed there for the rest of the day including stops and starts.
Has anybody else experienced this please?

Think you'll find this is quite normal.
the D4 is fitted with an Intelligent Power Management System which includes Smart Regenerative Charging, so whenever possible the alternator charges the battery when it is most economical to do so, such as when the car is coasting or braking rather than accelerating Morris Dancers: Drinkers with A Dance Problem

don't suppose the heated screens where on mine does this when its cold think the default on the screens is to switch on when its cold outside (pita if you ask me ) the charging seems normal for a fully charged batt
have you had this vehicle long ?? please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

I have had it 16months but this is the first time I had seen such a thing happening, last winter there wasn’t such low temperatures in this local or anywhere else I was. No I didn’t have the screens on at all after the early warm up before the journey. I have noticed the voltage is always much more constant than my D3’s ever are. Thanks.

It’s perfectly normal, and indicated that the battery is good, and that the battery management system is working fine. It harvests most of the charge energy when you don’t need engine power, ie decelerating.
The heated screens take a lot of power and can give a low reading soon after startup, but it should as you have found, recover quickly.

As said, that’s all good. When the battery is quite full (using layman’s terms here) the alternator is doing very little work. When you place a demand on the battery, the alternator will produce a greater charge to replenish the battery. So what you’re seeing is 12v in use, followed by 14v from the alternator as its replenishing the battery after a demand has been placed upon it.
If you see something as low as 11v flickering up to something like 12 to 13v, then you can start to worry as that would indicate a possible issue. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)
