High Mileage Warrantys
Heres one for you...
A friend and I are planning a trip into whats left of Europe before Christmas in his D3. Currently its just nudging 200k miles and seems to be sound. Its in daily use and is serviced every six months.
He is worried about something bad happening while we are away and I wondered if there is a warranty company that specialised in older, high mileage vehicles? its on a 57 plate.
We have spoken to his insurance company and they have included a "return home" bolt on so the D3 would be brought back if the worst happened at least.
Your thoughts?

You can get most parts and get a D3 repaired in most of Europe. Recovery home is the main thing if you blow an engine or gearbox.
I would advise carrying a few spare parts and the essential Gap lld

I think the trip has got him (and me) thinking about warranties tbh. Most are capped at 120,000 miles

Nobody will warrant a 200k vehicle for a reasonable price if at all as they would need to allow for a major failure.10k for a new engine for example. just put the money aside for any repairs and if you dont need any repairs you still gave all your money.

As above, get decent breakdown cover with full repatriation. Chuck in the gap IID and head for the nearest brewery in Belgium Visitor from fullfatrr.com

Exactly ^^^^^^^ Check very, very, very carefully the limits on repatriation, esp market value limits, then check again. And even if it can be repatriated they can deem it’s beyond economical repair then you’re on your own. And don’t underestimate repatriation costs, they are eye watering.
Oh, and daily use and serviced every six months sounds a bit like mine, until she was scrapped in NW Norway on a road trip. Unfortunately it means nothing to those rotating bearing shells.

As per DSL. My Disco did it’s last 2k miles on the back of a truck. So glad I read DSL’s post earlier this year as I was going to blag it with no breakdown cover when we went to France. Best £124 I have ever spent. The firm i used just did it by age and not mileage from memoryJames favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

I had a look through my Nationwide Flex Plus bank account UK & European breakdown details recently and couldn’t see any age or mileage restrictions.
They do offer repatriation etc. It looks a good policy. Has anyone found any restrictions with this policy that I have missed?

ISTR it was going to cost ~£9,000 to bring my car back 2,200 miles from Sortland, of which the AA was going to pay £5,300, which is what they thought it was worth. Assuming the car passes the “economical to repair” criteria. When they are getting quotes to recover the car home they are totally at the mercy of the local auto breakdown “club”. I’d broken down earlier in that trip in Finland with a broken gear-lever and, before they knew what the problem was, I was told it would be £1,500 to recover the car. I think the person reading that misread, he did a double take, and I think it was really £15,000. Am expensive business, getting a car back to the UK. And that’s before looking at limits for getting peeps back, god help you if you take your dog on holiday of want your kit shipped back if the car is written off, you’re totally on your own.

Read the small print very carefully, that’s all that counts when push comes to shove.
Have had the same issues with my 2005 V8. You have to read the small print very carefully. I took out a policy and it was only when it arrived that I realised it did not cover vehicles over 10 years old. No mention at all on the phone and they were quite happy to take the money knowing that the car was 12 years old at the time. I eventually went with the RAC as they were the only ones to offer repatriation regardless. I don't think I can get that now as the car is classes as too old.

Last year I took out the RAC all singing & dancing cover as it was the only one that I was confident would get me back from North Cape if the worse case happened up there. Sales lit/websites often only tell part of the story, a little light bed time reading with a magnifying glass is deffo needed.

i use to think different..
as you are only traveling within the continent europe, what is the worst that can happen?
total breakdown? engine or tranny breakdown? hire a Herz, or equal hire car and drive back to the UK, not that expensive... Calais Dover also not that expensive... get a trailer behind a friends car, drive back and collect the D3.... cost some time and fuel, but i recon for GBP 1000 till 1500 you have it home..
for the same budget you can get smaller issues repaired on the mainland... LR owners on the mainland can help you out in finding a reasonable LR repair workshop in the case of if...
everytime i did bigger travels (incl. UK, Norway, Swiss, France, Spain, etc..) , i thought this way, saved me more than € 150 each travel/year or more (many times 5 times traveling a year bigger international trips) i use to drive "old" cars as "standard" LR's , SAAB, FIAT etc.. i use to buy them when they have more than 100K Miles on them by default..
never needed a insurance for repair during those trips... i did save more than GBP 4500 that way...
if it ever happens/is needed... well i have a budget to spend..
being unsecure, can cost you money (and bring the insurers a lot of money) and i know being TOO secure can also cost your money, but withing certain borders, what is the worst that can happen? Mainland is only GBP 75 away for a return voyage last time i looked (today Best regards
