New FBH fault code reading software for Android phones
Hi,
as I'm a "bit handy with computers" I set myself the challenge of writing an Android fault code reader for the Discovery 3 that handles the Disco3 specific faults.
I've created a very rough first attempt - it currently handles just faults with the Fuel Burning Heater (FBH). I'd be really interested if anyone who's FBH isn't working would be happy to give it a whirl?
My app (called Landrover Fault Scanner) works as a plugin to an existing app called Torque Pro which does all manner of other interesting things when plugged into your car's diagnostic port.
Here's what you'll need to do to get it up and running:-
You'll then see my app icon when you start the Torque Pro app.
(BTW I have no affiliation or connection with the Torque Pro app).
As I've said, its a very rough first beta-test version so please don't expect too many bells and whistles - I will be adding more features to handle more fault codes once I've proved that it works ok.
Please let me know if it works OK or doesn't and also what sort of features you'd want.
Thanks in advance,
Matt.

Hi Steve - I'd love to do an iOS compatible version - it will probably have to wait until I've at least proven the basics work on Android I realise this isn't much help if you don't have an Android device.

No worries Matt - at least I'll have something to look forward to
but it appears not to be compatible with recent versions of Windoze - i.e. 7 or even 8 !
Is this a problem; I assume not if it only being used as you suggest.
Don't waste your time with Apple - they will take far too much of you sale price to make porting the app. worthwhile, and they are now being rapidly overtaken by more cost effective alternatives.

If you get that Bluetooth adaptor you wont need it to work with Windows as the Torque app is Android so not sure why you would need Windows compatibility .Cheers Ian

I was wondering if anyone had been able to give my fault scanner a go?
I'm happy to receive all feedback - good or bad!
Also, any suggestions for improvements or specific features won't go ignored.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Hi mattgreen, I have just recieved my ELM327 bluetooth adaptor from Ebay this morning. I have successfuly carried out an initial test with the unit using the free version of Torque on my HTC Desire HD Android phone. I have connected to the onboard computer OK and read fault codes (incidentally I have P0490 showing ...). Now I have got this far I will purchase the paid for version of Torque and do a test run again. When I get past that step then I will download your app and report back. My FBH is not running at moment despite sub zero temps over last couple of mornings. Observations on ELM327 unit - it "faces" the footwell so I can't directly see the LED indicators on its front, but that didnt cause me a problem. Cheers, Bob.

Hi Bob,
thanks for the update - it will be interesting to see if it spots any faults on the FBH. And thanks for taking the time to want to try it out.
The P0490 fault means "Exhaust gas recirculation control - circuit high".
I know what you mean about the LEDs facing into the footwell. You can buy extension cables and angled adapters - I have a short one which allows me to see the LEDs at least.
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Mattt, Installed Torque Pro on my phone and ran another test in the car. Successful communication with ELM327 and it also came up with "Current Fault Code- P0490", as before. Then downloaded your Landrover Fault Scanner app onto phone OK. Back to the car and establish bluetooth link again. Your app appears on the front screen of Torque Pro fine. Tested functionality of Torque Pro again, came up with P0490 again so that seems OK. Tapped the Landrover icon on Torque Pro homescreen and wento to your app. Pressed the Get Fault Codes button and got following response:
Request:03
Response:Null response
Request:07
Response:Null response
Good news or bad news
Bob.

Thanks...I'd say it's bad news - for some reason it's not getting any response back from the ELM327 though clearly the rest of Torque Pro is and the other apps too.
Hmmm, a puzzler.
I wonder if exiting Torque Pro and restarting it might help?
I'll try to reproduce the problem on my setup here.
Many thanks for the debugging help!
