I wouldn’t be to concerned, it’s a modern engine with better tolerances than say 60 years ago. When my father blew the engine in his Astra 1.3 works car, his employer sent everyone of the Astra’s (a substantial number) back to Vauxhall to have the GTE engine fitted. When my father collected the car he asked the engineer about running it in an the guy said to drive it how you normally drive. Drive it hard and you will get a free reving engine but will run rough, run it lightly and you will get a smooth and reliable engine but it won’t run free. Those were his words from 30 years ago.

the biggest change over the last 30 years is the quality of lubricants and new engine tolerances are far more uniform. Quality control is far better too. Honing of bores and polishing of cranks are done by machines, not by a hung over half asleep operator.
Honestly if it was my car i would just drive it normally. There is arguments for and against any of the other methods employed 30 years ago.
Change oil and filer at 100 and then again at 1000 miles. Then i would thrash it to see if anything breaks...

Thanks M3BOBBY & Jenseneverest, that's reassuring. Definite yes on the early oil change, maybe I'll leave it a little while before a really big thrash though - and will be a bag of nerves when I do!

Still waiting for the big crate to turn up at the workshop...

It’s in!

After some faffing with TNT the engine is finally delivered, fitted, run up, test driven and I’ve got my Disco back! Instructions from the garage were not to pussy-foot around but also not to over-rev (above 3000) and to avoid leaving it idling. They’ve flushed out the oil it was pre-filled with and filled with normal oil, and want it back for an oil and filter change after 500 miles. All pretty much consistent with most of the advice I’ve received here so I’m happy to go along with it.

Thanks again everyone for your help and advice. Stay safe.

That’s what was available new at a decent price - there were some LR ones out there but they wanted the Earth for them. Obviously meant I needed turbo etc swapped across from the old engine but no problem with any of those parts. And most importantly, of course, swapped for the correct oil filler cap 🙂

Out of curiosity, how much was the jag lump, and was it brand new, from a dealer?

The engine was £4500, crated, warrantied, never run but manufactured in 2009 according to the paperwork. Closest I saw for a LR engine was over £6k. I don’t know if it was from a JLR dealer, I don’t know the source but the Indy who supplied and fitted it (BG Landrovers near Ross on Wye) said they only buy new or used engines from 3 or 4 suppliers and this one was on their “trusted” list. Apparently they have 3 more engines like this which I think BG are going to try and nab!

I could have got hold of a good second hand engine for half that, but there were none showing up that were tested and known to work, and didn’t have too high a mileage so I might have had to wait a long time. As it is I’ll be keeping the car for a good long time now!
