Cam belt and oil pump change. DIY
Hi guys,
I recently replaced the cam belt and oil pump on my 54plate D3 2.7 TDV6.
The car started on the first turn of the key afterwards. I didn’t lock the flywheel ( stupidly) but obviously locked the cams.
The engine did sound very rattle at the top end on the right bank but that died away, probably as oil was sent up top.
Now I have an intermittent no start problems. The engine is spinning over but not fireing.
Then other times it will fire up no problems. I driven the car and has all the power and no smoke...... I’m wondering if the crank moved a tiny amount and now the crank sensor isn’t reading correctly.
I’m no mechanic (obviously)
Any advise appreciated. Thanks

So I am going to strip it down and start again, just for peace of mind if nothing else.
How does the crank lock though.i have the locking kit, but I was under the impression that it simply locked in one of the many teeth on the flywheel. Is this the case or does it have a separate timing hole for Tdc?
In other words how will I know that the crank Is perfectly aligned/timed?

There is a hole above the starter motor , it has a cap on it , if yiur timing is out then you may have fun finding the hole in the fly wheel

So do I need to lock the cams first , then search for the flywheel hole ?

What kind of timing kit do you have?? In the Lr timing kit there are only pin shaped tools for the flywheel, no gear shaped....
There is one in the kit for the manual box and one for the auto box.
Simply turning the crank with the pulley bolt, until the holes crankcase/flywheel line up , easy peasy
Ps, time the camshafts first..then remove the belt.. then time the flywheel... what I read, it is only out a few degrees, and.... did you not made a mistake with the belt itself? One notch wrong or/and when mounting the tensioner?
After mounting a new belt and tensioner, it is important to turn the crank 8 times and then check again with your timing tools, if it is still proper timed..Best regards

Thanks for the reply Harold.
I have a 5 piece timing kit. One for auto one for manual and 3 cam pins....not sure what the 3rd is for?
I’m sure I dint make any errors. I turned the crank 4 times and the cam pins slotted in perfectly.
I replaced the oil pump so obviously no marks on the new one, but marked the pulled then realigned by eye.... I’m sure if it is out then as you say, just a few degrees.
The starter motor looks a nightmare to remove so I got lazy and didn’t remove it and lock the flywheel.

But how did you lock the crank/pulley then when you did remove the bolt??
100Nm + 90 degrees is not something you easy loose or thighten..Best regards
