Rag sucked into intake HELP!!!

I forgot to remove a rag I was using to cover intake and when I started the car it got sucked in, I tried to vacuum it out without success..

I believe it may be stuck before the turbo so would like to remove the hose but I’d like some advice on how this is done please?

Oh crap Shocked
Assuming the rag is still in one piece can you not fish it out with some stiff wire ?? Or a net curtain wire if it needs some more flex in it.
Think it is a body off job (or cut a hole) to get on the turbo properly....

Wow ... I think that will win a prize for craziest first post Shocked

Feel for you ... turned over an X1/9 engine after part rebuild without taking spark plugs out, felt physically sick until I'd proven to myself there hadn't been any water seeped in and thus no piston damage.

Not taken tubing apart so can't help you ... but I'm sure someone will be along shortly.

It’s not body off.

You can remove it via the passenger wheel arch.
It’s a right pain and fiddle though.

Try and get a camera down there first if you can and see if it has been digested by the turbo. If the engine was running for more than 30 seconds it's very possible been chewed up by the impeller and spat out into the charge side.

Have a look at the intercooler hose beneath the radiator and see if there's any debris from the rag.

Just disconnected the hose under radiator and nothing there...

I don’t have access to a camera

Try and beg, borrow, or steal one Smile It's you best bet to see what is needed to remove it.

You could try compressed air and use it to push back from the intercooler bottom hose and you might get lucky. (Tape up the hose and pop a hole in the tape.) Don't be tempted to start it in case the rag has jammed the turbo. The small hose is tight to shift but you can try releasing the bolts holding the metal pipe to give you a bit more manoeuvrability. (tricky to get at the front one Rolling Eyes )

There's no easy or straightforward answer to your dilemma, you just have to "suck it and see" Thumbs Up

At the front of the wheel arch you should see the plastic intake pipe and a metal one.

It is secured at this point by a bolt or 2

This is the pipe. THere is a mounting half way along

Hi

Plus 1 what’s already been mentioned

Don’t know if this may help , as u look at the turbo, the short hose goes to the intercooler hoses and the bottom vertical hose clamp is the air inlet duct, as in that’s the pipe that ur rag would have been sucked into

Alas don’t know if this will work, remove ur inner plastic wheel arch liner

undo the bolts that @Pete K has referred to, on the plastic inlet pipe , loosen the vertical clamp on the turbo , then fingers crossed with the air inlet unbolted should allow u to pull the pipe off the turbo

Alas don’t know if ur have to also loosen the metal pipe , to allow the plastic inlet pipe to come back

hope it helps

This is the air inlet Pete referred to

I took off the pipe connector to the radiator and shoved a vacuum in and blew it out!

Thanks guys this is my 1st post but I have a lot more jobs I plan to get round to so I’ll definitely be back!

Cheers!
