New owner - ICE install advise please |
|
Hi all
I am just about to buy a Disco 3 2.7 TD V6 GS, still not decided which so I want to make the ICE upgrade as easy as possible.
I want replace the head unit with a carplay double din unit such as this https://www.halfords.com/technology/car-au...55917.html (they won't be fitting it!).
Now from what I have read here, the best bet is to get one with the most basic radio, single CD, no sat nav. If so, I should just be able to swap it out using a fascia adapter and wiring adapter, correct? I will just use Google maps via car play so no sat nav required,
Can you also advise:
- Is it possible to get steering wheel controls working?
- Do I need anything else e.g. amp, speakers?
- Will all the speakers work?
- Will I lose any functionality in the car?
- Where is best place to get it fitted?
Thanks
Hal.

- Is it possible to get steering wheel controls working? Yes - I think you need an additional adaptor
- Do I need anything else e.g. amp, speakers? - No
- Will all the speakers work? - Yes
- Will I lose any functionality in the car? - Some models have adjustments that can be made via the dash. You will loose the ability to change them.
- Where is best place to get it fitted? - DO it yourself
You will need to bring an ignition supply up from the cigar lighter (green/white wire) to the headunit so that it comes on automatically with the ignition

Which system do you have? if it has the map then you will need the bypass loom, I used the Connects2 one available on eBay with no issues. If its the base model then you just need the basic loom, again available on eBay. Connects2 also do a steering wheel kit which I haven't used but would assume itd be OK based on other Connects2 kit I have used. You will also need the fascia and double din frame. I would suggest buying these together as not all frames fit the fascia. You will also need a Fakra to aerial adaptor.
Fascia:

Bypass loom:

If possible I would try to get everything from one seller that way if there are anyissues you have a single point of contact. The frame I had didnt fit the fascia and I ended up having to file it out to get the frame to fit. Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

I haven't bought it yet, I was going to get the most basic one possible (without the sat nav and screen) so that I can replace it easily with something more modern.
So I am after an GS not HSE.

Is it worth missing out on heated windscreen, heated seats, parking sensor (if they work), xenons, electric seats, sunroof just to be easier to change the headunit . only you can answer that.
