Help! D4 going in to restricted performance
Hi All
After some help if possible. I’m in the Caravan with the D4 In Looe about 350 miles from home and as we got near Looe I’ve been hit with the restricted performance and red warning triangle a few times. It resets after a shutdown and restart but when it happens it kills performance and the hills around here become a bit scary with the best part of 2 tons on the back!
I had both Inlets and the Fuel filter housing replaced about 600 miles ago so don’t think it’s them. When it’s driving without the fault all seems normal and has good power etc. It did about 30 miles before it popped up again and was when backing off the throttle after a hill!
Any ideas and anything I can do to help me get it home safely next week?
Cheers
Andy
Try replacing the fuel filter if its not been changed, but without any error codes its guess work, is there anybody on the board near you that can read the fault codes?.

Hi Flack
Thanks for coming back. I’m kicking myself for not bringing my Iid tool! If there is anyone down this way with a reader that could help that would be awesome! Filter was changed at the same time as the housing so wouldn’t think it’s that bit guess it could be. Only other thing was that it had half a tank of Asda Fuel about 50 miles before so guess that crap fuel could be an issue?
Cheers

Similar happened to me a few weeks ago out of the blue coming home funnily enough shortly after filling up at Sainsbury's.
Turned out to be my 2nd (rear) MAF connector had become loose and lost contact, not the fuel in my case.
The connector actually didn't latch when I investigated further it so needed a small cable tie to hold it on.
Give that a try?
Or get some switch cleaner (Not brake or clutch) from Halfords and give the MAFs a good clean? (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/lubricating-and-penetrating-oil/halfords-electrical-contact-cleaner-500ml-621335.html)In today's world, if you contribute something, you don't contribute enough. If you contribute nothing, you receive everything.

On my last D4, that was caused by a sticking actuator on the second turbo. Only triggered when “booting it” or under heavy load.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Thanks for the tips chaps
Will give the MAFs a good clean up. I took the car out this morning for a 12 mile round trip and have it a good boot a couple of times and couldn’t get it to go back in to fault!

I had the dreaded RP fault intermittently for about 6 months TSOV replaced, came back, MAF sensor replaced, could not get the bloody thing to come on when at the Indy so eventually they did a smoke test, found a small leak in a seal on the inlet - that fixed it. Try Land Ranger in Stockport. Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Do have a look at Desb's post "Reduced Performance when towing caravan" if you haven't already.

Hi Uffbrock,
Thanks for that heads up, the symptoms are identical, will take a look at that part tomorrow as it’s pitch black here now. Did anyone ever get a permanent fix other than zip ties and jubilees! or reason as to why it was happening? I am wondering if the clip on mine could have been weakened as it’s been off to replace the manifolds but mine is a much older car than the ones in those threads as well.
Will take a look first thing and report back, I also pulled the MAFs out today and the one for the primary air route/turbo looks a lot dirtier than the secondary so am off to get some of the electrical contact cleaner tomorrow as well and will give that a good clean.
Cheers

Disco 4
Hi Andy
I have a Discovery 4 with the same intermittent faults coming up. After reading the codes mine turned out to be an EGR valve issue.

I seem to recall that Desb's dealer managed to obtain a stronger bracket. My dealer installed a new throttle body and air duct. In my case that did the trick but I did subsequently install a couple of zip ties to reduce the likelihood of a repeat. So far so good.
Oh the joys of Land Rover ownership!
Good luck. I hope you get to the bottom of whatever is causing your problem.

Hi all
Thanks so much for your help last week. I’m happy to say I got home safely with no reoccurrence of any faults from Looe to back home in Cheshire so circa 300 miles with the van on the back. So all I did whilst down there was as to clean the map sensors and check the throttle body/plenum connection.
Have scanned for error codes this morning and have the below, it was the Sunday the 16th when I had all the issues... any ideas?

I used to get Restricted Performance, and red triangle, with code P2263 a lot when I first got my D4.
And I mean a lot.
Used to only come up when I was just wafting along at 60ish under light throttle. Typically on the motorway to work on a slight uphill.
Most times it cleared after stopping and restarting. But not always so I got into the habit of clearing it with the IID.
Had it back to the dealer multiple times, but they never found anything wrong. No surprise there, as the dash cam showed they never test drove it under the conditions I described to them when it happened.
I could see them doing smoke tests etc, no leaks apparently. And because the code wasn't ever present when they had it, their computer said nothing wrong so they had no idea what else to look at.
After chatting with Joe at JAS LR about it, he thought it was related to the light throttle, possibly mucky
sticky butterfly flap in the throttle body and the EGR valves opening/closing (can't remember now what his full technical assessment was, but it's basically a transient over boost) and his advice was to just drive it a little harder to keep it out of that small window where the issue happened.
Since then (about 18 months) it only came up once, and yes, that was when I was just wafting along under light throttle.
He also advised to remove and clean the throttle body if it still happened. Not bothered doing that for a one off, as it doesn't seem to be a quick & easy job, and I don't want to risk cracking the manifolds.
I do tend to drive lightly, but try to remember to drop it into Sports mode and give it some welly now and then to clear the tubes (Italian tune-up I believe it's called).
My code details:
P2263-22(27) Turbo/supercharge boost system performance - General signal failure - signal amplitude>maximum
Mine showed (27), whilst yours shows (68), no idea what difference that makes.
