Tried it last night with the seasoned wood we use in the log burner, it lit and burned Ok but not a huge lot of heat. Wondered if briquettes or similar would be better? Or kiln dried?
Can anyone who's a seasoned fire pit user could recommend something.____

I get boxes of compressed sawdust for my all rounder when camping gives out amazing heat and only £5 or £6 for a big box full

I use any inferior wood or that which I can’t burn in the house due to it being treated etc. I’ve yet to run out, but we don’t use the fire bowl that often.

I'm fairly new at this, but find that kiln dried hard wood provides a long clean burn with little smoke.
I've tried kiln dried soft wood which burn quickly and offer less heat.
I've thought about putting an inch or two of sand in the bottom of my stainless steel fire pit. The reasoning is that the sand helps to evenly distribute the heat from the burning fire. However the sand will mix with the ashes which I usually spread on the compost heap, so I'm not sure.
A guest recently suggested " fire glass " or lava stone:-
I think I prefer the latter but would appreciate others views.

If the logs are to big they tend to smolder and smoke like feck split them a bit smaller makes all the difference -------------------------------------------------

You’re right of course, but I’ve got lots of off cuts and left over building timber from various projects. I mix it in with inferior wood and odd shape pieces from trees we’ve had cut down and in an open bowl it works well. We don’t exactly huddle around it though.

I'm using hardwood logs, not treated, split into smallish sections and seasoned for at least a couple of years. They burn brilliantly in the house log burner, just a bit disappointing on the firepit. It's an open bowl type, none of your fancy chimneys or whatever ____
