Skoda make some bloody good cars, DG. Shame you're a badge snob. Our 56 plate Octavia Estate has cost a fortune less than my LRs have. Looks a darn sight better than the D5 too. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

If I was to be lured back into a LR again it would be the new Defenfer, nothing else is of any interest. But I’m just not sure I want the hassle. I’ve owned a Karoq for shade over 6 months & 4.5k miles now and it hasn’t put a foot wrong. Not an error, fault, bong, message, squeak, rattle, nothing. And it cost me 1/3 what I’d have to shell out for if I was to go for a FE Defender. Do I want to go back to a brand that wouldn’t go 6 weeks without a problem, never mind 6 months? All that extra hassle, do I really want it for a car that’s a lot more expensive to run. FinCon (aka MrsDSL) has given me the green light to get one once they are available a bit cheaper second hand, but I’d have to sell Skippy, which I really don’t want to do. I’ve kind of gotten used to hassle free & cheap motoring, the hassle free bit being the most important.
To get back on topic, re getting a D5, that option hasn’t even crossed my mind. I like to look back at my car and inwardly smile, not sure that option is available.
Well I have been running a Kodiak now for near 2 years. Serviced yesterday £190 done in a couple of hours. Does 45 mpg easily just knocking about-50+ on a run to Scotland. £150 tax. Only thing that has gone wrong is the stupid door protector snapped off and has not been replaced. Carries our 2 big dogs but there is not as much room as my Disco3 in back.

All part of the evil diesel emissions cheating VAG empire!
Though to be fair to DSL & icestationzebra, if you are forced to pick one of the four brands, Skoda is the one as (ISTR) they're the best bang for buck of basically a set of "badge-engineered" vehicles (BMC in the form of Austin/Morris/Wolseley/Riley have nothing on VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda!) All subjective ...my lad has a Fabia Monte Carlo so don't beat yourself up too much ....ultimately you and others enjoy writing off what is a good motor for sport ....I can do the same because nothing is perfect ...is it 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

After all is said and done, if you like the D5 and it does what you want it to do, then have one. If it doesn’t, don’t.
Being a D3/4 forum, comparisons are inevitable, but that’s a mistake IMO. There simply isn’t a direct replacement for the D4, you’re going to have to compromise on something.

Crumbs the Kodiaq is cost effective. Looks good but could I live with a 1.5 TSI.

Amazing what can be done with little engines these days - my daughter has a brand new Merc A Class with a 1300cc petrol engine it - goes like stink! Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I have a d5 and a new defender (and a Range Rover) and a farm, the d5 is a development of the d4 and the new defender is that of the original.
There are a few features that are different to the d4, but that’s similar to the d2 to d3/4...which I remember being hated.
I’ve put a lot of miles on the 3 d5s, towing and city work and its great in all settings.
The d5 is better than its rivals many always...I see people comparing a d4 to a Volvo but rarely apples with apples
I’ve not missed anything from the d4 to 5, the rear can be made nicer with options on higher models, but you also don’t see it when driving. It would have been nice to have a split tail gate or dual opening one like the early rrs but that’s going.
The defender is not a d4 replacement and the d5 is more than the defender - both are great cars to have on the driveMike

The most noticeable difference for me is the lower seating position and smaller glass area of the D5 in comparison to the D4. I drove a D5 everyday for 7 months, I got used to it, but never enjoyed that aspect of it. It felt like a car to me, albeit a high up one. It didn’t feel like a Land Rover. Which is probably exactly what was intended.
There’s a lot to like about the D5, especially the new 3.0 SD6, bit as I said, I don’t think direct comparisons with a D4 are particularly useful. It’s a very different vehicle. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
