D4 key fob and the washing machine... |
|
Hi all
Needless to say, this combination doesn't always turn out great for the key, aside from it being clean.
I've dried the key, tried replacement battery etc but it doesn't work.
My local LR garage helpfully just offered to sell me a new programmed key for £800 +. I pointed out it was a key not a cambelt, but they didn't blink.
So my question is...can anyone recommend any reputable companies please in Kent / SE London that can sort me out a new key for (much) less than that ?
Thank you in advance !

A friend fell in the sea from a boat with a Citroen remote key in his pocket. The car refused to start and came up with an anti theft warning on the dashboard. Luckily it still started with the plain spare key, as we were in Greece.
Opened the key up and washed it out in fresh water then left it to dry in the sun for a day. It started to work after that and was ok until the car was sold several years later.
Caused a good laugh at the next service when they talked through the error codes stored in the car’s computer as they had not seen the anti theft code come up before. Disco 4

I dipped my key into the sea a few months ago. Completely wrecked the key, nothing worked. Dealers wanted the price of a new key, new KVM (keyless control module) and cost of programming = small fortune in line with the price that you have been quoted.
I sourced the correct fob from ebay, got a new physical key made using a photo of the old one as I upgraded to the newer fob and the old key didn't fit, purchased a IID to programme the key and was still £££s better off plus I now have a IID for other things and could sell it on again if I moved on from the D4.
Hope that helps

Firstly, check your insurance policy. Some of them cover replacement keys. Secondly, although I probably think you've tried it, take it to bits and put it somewhere warm and dry for a good long while, then try it with a new battery.

also worth cleaning the electronics inside the key correctly to ensure that the circuitry is OK - there are companies that specialise in computer spill repairs that could clean the circuit with the correct material in an ultrasonic cleaner. Must stop buying shiny toys....

We lost a key so had no option of trying to get old to work. Dealer quoted a lot of money north of £800 but said most of that was the key less module and programming if it was needed.
They managed to sort out a new key and get it to re-programme without changing the key less module, ended up about £280 MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Try Lock Doctor (if you have them in UK), they reprogrammed a replacement key for €100, once you source the right key. Dealer wanted to replace KVM etc at cost of over €800
