Has anyone experience in fitting a ball-valve to a saucepan? My mother-in-law plans to start her Christmas sprouts boiling at first-light tomorrow but (not unexpectedly at her age) is worried about having to top-up the water day and night for the next few weeks.
A ball-valve (or some other automated system) would ease the strain on the various skeletal joints that have developed arthritis as a result of her lifetime of vitamin-free vegetables. If heat is likely to affect the float adversely, I have considered some sort of ultrasonic depth measurement and solenoid valve. Mating the flat flange of an ex-works ball-valve to the curved wall of a saucepan might require (what Johnny Cash would call) an ay-daptor plate. Equally, what will (inevitably be) vigorously boiling water may lack the effective density to displace the float and close the valve.
Any suggestions? Those involving violence need not be posted (believe me - I've thought of them all and they all have detectable flaws).
(My wife will be cooking the sprouts on Christmas Day until they are perfect - or else! )

Put a camping stove under a cold water tank and cook them in there? Make sure it's an asbestos one as the plastic will melt.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Will it melt? One can boil water in a paper cup over a candle because the water disipates the heat enough to stop the cup going on fire.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. I'm sure my late uncle would have considered them "al dente" starting the cooking process this close to Christmas... assuming you mean Christmas 2020 ?
He used a baby-belco IIRC to produce the green paste we all "enjoyed" for many years..

This original problem could be solved by using a seperate tank for the ball valve and a heat resistant pipe to connect it to the boiling vessel. No adaptor required if a square pot is used. Half-inch copper pipe would be more than enough for the flow required. Ball-valve tank can be plastic, e.g. a plastic jerry can.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Can’t she just put the sprouts into an unvented hot water cylinder? It will act like a pressure cooker (so the sprouts will be more thoroughly cooked, making up for the late start) with the added benefit that the mains water will keep topping it up every time the PRV blows off. If you collect the blow off water, then hey presto, a healthy sprout broth tincture. An ex-Disco3 / FFRR owner ......

What’s wrong with a soft, tender, flavoursome, well done sprout that melts in your mouth. Anything else and you might as well collect the last of the autumn leaves and eat them raw! There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.

We don’t need to start so early as I can borrow a plasma drill head from work which will allow us to slice said sprouts if they are not soft enough after being in the plasma medium (at around 2000 degrees C) for a couple of weeks I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
