| Ctek charger and new battery |
|
Hello all,
I have just fitted a new AGM battery (original was also AGM) to my 2015 D4. I am reasonably happy as that was the original battery.
I am now wondering if it worth while using a maintenance charger or not? The car used to be used daily on high mileage but now it may sit for a few days at a time and journeys are not so long.
I see a lot here about the Ctek charger and if this is a good way to go which one should i get. Or is there another out there that is better?

I use a CTEK on my 2014 D4 new OEM battery (AGM).
I have a 12v socket voltage/current reader and these cars eat power.
You can get (see link above on the site header) a towbar connector for the CTEK so no wires under the bonnet/hood. Jim

Shouldn't be necessary to use the Ctec in summer, winter yes, I top mine up about once every two weeks in winter.
A very good sign the battery needs topping up is if the SS stops working without a fault light showing, if a fault light comes on the small aux battery needs charging or replacing. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thank you M3DPO, we had exactly those signs last year, firstly the SS failed. We were happy though as find it an irritant! But a while later the light came on and we replaced the aux battery to solve it. SS still did not work until yesterday when i fitted a new battery.
I do wonder though....the first battery lasted from new in 2015 to yesterday. Would a ctek charger have prolonged its life?
So.....are they actually worth getting?

All batteries last longer if they are kept fully charged, AGM batteries are a massive improvement to wet cell and will charge faster and at a lower voltage, if you only do short journeys in winter the answer is yes they are worth getting. The SS is an excellent device to inform you of the state of charge, when it stops working the main battery is not fully charged, so if your SS stops working for a long period and you are using the vehicle as normal you need a charger or you will shorten the length of your batteries life. It can when others can't,
