Gearbox fault TCM?

Hello, I have a problem with my 6sp autobox in my 2011 D4. Sometimes, I believe when the oil is up to temp, I get a Gearbox fault when changing from D to N or P. Fault code is P0915 Gearshift position-circuit range/performance and it is set in the TCM. The box is only using limited gears and if the car is in P it needs to be restarted to release it. Initially it got better when I cleaned and lubricated the gear linkage but it didn´t last.

I will try to adjust the linkage again but I feel that the problem might be the position sensor in the TCM. After spending a long time online searching for clues I have realized that it is a rather common problem for the ZF 6HP28 box. Buying a new Mechatronic unit is expensive and I have seen that some have actually changed the sensor only. It is soldered to the TCM and covered with resin so I believe it is not for me to fix it. Does anyone know of a service that can fix this if sending them the TCM? Other ideas?

Thanks,
Peter

Sorry I can't help. Where have you found out this is a common problem with the 6 Speed gearbox?

The position sensor on the right hand side of the gearbox sits directly under the Aircon drain tube and gets water on it quite often. It's a common fault on the 6 speed box and is reasonably easy for a diy person to fix.

Common is maybe not the correct world but it seems to be fairly regular in other brands using the ZF 6HP boxes like BMW:s.

TigerRecovery, I think you mean the manual gearbox? In the 6-speed auto the position sensor is positioned on the mechatronic unit together with the TCM inside the gearbox.

I might have found the cause for my problems. I have cleaned the earth point for the transmission. It was rather crusty and I haven´t had any problems after cleaning it. As this is an intermittent fault in my car I just hope it isn´t an unusually long time between reoccuring faults...

The transmission earth point is on the body behind the right headlight. If you take the headlight out you will see two earth points. I cleaned bouth of them.
