Oil level

I'm puzzled when check the oil should the car be in normal ride height mode, checked at work ONLY a quarter full (says ok)get home left the car an hour now says half full?could it be the sensor playing up

Ride height doesn’t make any difference, but the engine needs to be at operating temperature for the most accurate reading. Another piece of stupid design from LR! Rolling Eyes

What make no sense is that the ECU knows if the oil level is below the minimum and yet still allows you to start the engine. You'd think that even at the very least, you'd get a dashboard warning the same as when the coolant level is low. Mad

On my MY16, you can either do it when the engine is cold, before you start, or wait 15 minutes or so after turning off. Neither of which give an 'operating temperature' reading.

Taken from the 2016 Discovery 4 handbook. Bullet Point 2 states the engine must have reached operating temperature.

...and when the oil level sensor harness gets filled with oil (yes, it is in the sump...) it is great fun to change it. Land Rover in its wisdom put the sensor in the sump without a possibility to remove it other than removing the sump which means the front diff and starter needs to be removed.
