Car won’t start: ‘vehicle fault, system shutdown’ |
|
First time posting! Help!!
Dear all, any help would be appreciated. I have a jan 2005(54) disco 3 HSE diesel. Done 160000 miles.
To begin I have had a myriad of problems over the years including
-erg valve failures, no power at all till a couple of thousand revs,
-knackered bearings,
-a seized rear brake calliper which stranded me on the M40( a near death experience and trip on low loader),
-passenger a pillar trim blew off on the m40 south of Oxford where there is a strong cross wind. Interestingly a block of silicone sealant in bottom fixation hole.
- a blocked heater matrix which froze my wife but was surprisingly hard to trouble shoot(dismantled everything to replace blend motors which were fine, advised by LR specialist I needed a new air box assembly!?!? so I tried the matrix; which it was.
-Failed lower tailgate lock/actuator. Fixed with wire, zip tie and skinned knuckles.
-shuddering from gear box between 2nd and third gears, awful on hills, fixed by transmission power flush- twice. One specialist said that it was probably my differential due to a drone, and couldn’t recommend the flush as could finish off my transmission. Another specialist said my diff was fine, needed a new wheel bearing and a lower flush as well as lots of bushes. Ouch£! Still have the original diff. But at least shudder went for a year.
-failed suspension(fixed pump and latterly air shock),
-cracked inter cooler hose, clouds of black smoke from exhaust and low power,
-failed centrebearing, though the car was going to shake to pieces above 26 mph,
- failed tensioner,
-bushes everywhere,
- failing electronic parking brake due to lack of servicing by garage (not specialist). Once realised sorted without need for replacement.
-failed heated windscreen on driver side which takes the loss a bit!
-failed coolant expansion vessel sensor,
-short circuited alternator which fried new battery and stopped me getting into car,
-failed driver door lock actuator(fixed by clever trick involving holding the external handle open and open imaging and closing central locking while banging the door with my hip; after I’d dismantled everything and ordered a new actuator first obviously),
-frequent dashboard warnings “HDC fault and special programmes unavailable or transmission fault” which I took to be low charge in battery.
-put £100 of petrol in it, I cannot recommend this!!! Unless you like off white smoke and a really poor ride!!
Now my CURRENT PROBLEM; My sunroof drains were blocked resulting in flood in passenger side which has been a nightmare to sort!! I replaced the warped windscreen plenum cover (pollen filter dry), passenger A pillar trim and re-covered bottom hole and replaced fastenings, sunroof drain nozzles front and back on the offending side (passenger). This was a nightmare at the front as had to remove the central junction box. Easy enough to remove.... having spent a few hours over Christmas trying to change end of nozzle, finally managed to get it in to the hole with silicon spray lubricant, I then struggled for days to reconnect the rear CJB connectors. (Nearly had a divorce for ruining Christmas and my fractured shoulder has not made CJB access easy I can tell you!) I’ve I had the car started fine, huge relief and still trying to dry out the carpet, challenging at -2 degrees!.
Been fine for a couple of weeks, then intermittent ‘death’ on attempting to start the engine, no starter motor actuation. Dash says ‘system check’ then seems happy but engine/starter are still dead. Turn off ignition and remove key the radio console says ‘vehicle fault, system shutdown’. When this has happened sporadically in the past, hitting the dashboard and ensuring gear selector in park solved the problem. However car has been unable to turn over the engine. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and it worked again, but then when I tried to restart the engine for a second time dead again. So I figured disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes must reset something so I’d be all right if I have a spanner with me. However a repeated attempt at disconnect and reconnecting the battery had no beneficial effect.
Where should I start?
Just switched batteries and wiggled wires next to battery, battery disconnected for 20 mins, then car started and back to ‘HDC fault’ and running sweetly. Assuming I can get it to go again tommorow (and the garage is open during lockdown), I’ll drive the car to my local LR specialist although have no idea about whether this is something they will have expertise in or if I’m being taken for a ride through inexperience.Any advice for likely causes of this error would be appreciated. I have searched through previous pos ta which don’t quite sound the same as mine, hence I’m finally posting. The instrument cluster seems to be ok, all lights and LCD displays work as they should. Although I notice that when I start the car sometimes the trip mileage has reset itself to 0. I have read that Abbas connection can upset canbus, similarly the gizmo module behind the battery or the brake switch and something in the left rear. But none of the articles on the website quite fit the bill.
PS: this web site has been a fantastic resource over my past 7 years of ownership!
PPS: I have had a drone from the front somewhere which may be front diff or worn front prop shaft splines but doesn’t seem to be getting worse(years) My discovery 3 has replaced Lego!!
