Used D4 - is a new engine a good sign or a bad sign?
Hey folks,
Prospective D4 owner here. Looking at the classifieds (i.e. autotrader.co.uk) I see some that advertise having had a new engine put in relatively recently.
For instance this one - new engine from Stratstone LR 1500 miles ago, still under warranty
Or this one: "New Engine from NWS Engines fitted 20k miles ago along with new turbos new inlet manifolds, oil cooler, front and rear timing belts".
My question is, is having had a new engine fitted (somewhat) recently a good sign or a bad sign? Does it indicate (as in the case of that second one) a lot of the potential issues have already been sorted? or does it indicate overall poor maintenance history?
Having read about the crank failure issue I suspect that as potential cause, but I haven't inquired with either of these vehicles yet.
Thoughts?

The former would be a genuine engine from JLR (one would assume) since it was fitted by a dealer. Can’t get better than that. You’d want to verify this, though.
The latter, well, search NWS on the forums.
There are plenty of ways one can break the engine so it doesn’t (IMO) say anything else than what the repair budget really was.
As above. NWS probably wouldn't make 1 star rating on here..

Something strange about that first one, number plate not recognised?
Looking at the rear number plate pic and it does not look quite right, maybe me?
Also no front on pic

... and the 'story' of a replacement engine would then 'explain' why the numbers don't match??
Though in the case of that one, I'd say it's on/been on private plate and the original is stuck back on for the photo's.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Thanks for the input everyone.
Will stay away from the NWS engine. Might check out the Stratstone replacement though to see what the documentation says.

I believe that it could be one plate stuck over another - I wouldn't waste time on either - NWS is well known
Keep looking here, where you are much more likely to find a decent vehicle which has been looked after.
