Audio Problem

I have a problem with my Audio system that I need some help with.

When music is played, very loud static noise suddenly starts blasting out of the speakers and will not stop until the car is turned off and locked with the key fob. Turning the engine off alone does not make the sound go away.

This used to happen once a month or so, but now it happens multiple times a day. The sound is deafening and I have to park up straight away once it starts and sort it.

I noticed when the Amplifier (under drivers seat) is disconnected (either via the power cable or either disconnecing the optical cable) the sound stops. So my guess was the amplifier is faulty. I opened it up and had a look inside using my basic electronic knowledge but can't find any issues. No signs of any water damage or anything.

I have since tried another 2 amplifiers and I have the same issue. So pretty sure it's not the amp that is faulty.

Few things I've noticed,:
1. When the problem occurrs, the screen starts disabling/enabling all the input sources very quickly, it looks like it's trying to connect to the amp but can't. When I disconnect the amp when the music is playing (disconnect power cable), it does the same thing.
2. On the second and third Amp I tried, the loud static noise doesnt happen. It just stops playing the music and disabled and enables the inputs.
3. The problem only occurrs in the first 5mins or so of turning the engine on, and its about a 50/50 chance of it happening. If it doesnt happen in the first 5mins, I can drive for hours without the problem occurring so I don't think there is a loose connection. However when I turn the engine off and on again, there is a 50/50 chance of it happening again within 5mins.

I could potentially connect a switch to the amp power and put it within reach of the driver seat. So if the problem occurrs, I switch the amp off and on again and do so until it works. I really don't want to do this though.

What else could it be? Could it be the screen unit that is faulty?

following with interest, similar issues with my D4 which has the later screen layout - been chasing a solution for this for 18 months!

It's pretty common across the LR range if you spend some time on Google.

If you have a TV in the car there is a fix you can try by setting it to US instead of UK, mine doesn't have the TV so its not that in my case.

Good luck!

I seem to remember that on the gearbox near the shift lever was a capicitor that burns out and this has caused problems with static through the speakers.

Flack Thumbs Up

Hi Flack I think that was on D3 and was for interference on AM/MW radio? This crackle problem is different to that, its entirely random, and can sound like the speakers about to explode for a few seconds. It seems to be very common across a lot of the recent LR range - Ive seen posts on RR and Evoque forums all very similar.

I would try another Bluetooth module first

I've been wondering whether to try that (another Bluetooth module) actually - no particular reason though.

Do you have any specific reason for the suggestion?

I had a similar problem to yours. The buttons were the same as in your video. And it was clicking and squeaking. Cured by replacing Bluetooth module
