Brake pipe corroded - Cost

Hi everyone,

Very new to this website & Discovery's as hopefully about to buy a 2007 Discovery 3, its has a log MOT but advisories on the Brake pipe corroded all round. Could anyone give me an idea on cost to replace within a garage as I'd like to replace as soon as purchase.

Thanks
T

More detail of advisory notes would help. If all underside brake pipes are significantly corroded, you should replace flexi hoses at the same time. Certainly a few hours labour.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply, I've taken a screen shot from the check-mot.service.gov.uk see below. Any help would be great.

Best,
T

The usual problem. Replacing and joining sections of the front to rear pipes is the awkward part. I would fit four new rear flexi hoses, along with a new short pipe each side.

Less than £100 for parts. I was charged £350 just for front to rear replacement on my first D3. From subsequent personal experience of doing several others, I would say that is excessive (based on an hourly rate of £72 inc VAT)

2007 models need an oil pump and cambelt change.
Gonna be expensive if you are getting garage to do the work

I would be getting the garage to do this work, its on the market for £6500 with 97K on the clock.

I'm new to Discovery's do you think this is worth a punt & also do you feel the work would need to be actioned straight away?

97K sounds ok.
Not aware on prices but gut thinks it’s in the high side?

I would get the oil pump done ASAP. Otherwise the car is scrap.

Rear pipes are common issue. Don’t think the rear brakes do a lot on these.

Road Car tax is £550 +(or is it higher)

If you have tools and willing to get your hands dirty, it really helps with ownership

Thanks for the advice Pete. Most of them I've been looking at up to 9.5K have up to 140K milage, so it looks to me like a decent D3.

Excuse my ignorance, does the oil pump require replacing at the same time as the Brake Pipes, is it best to do them all at the same time?

Or is the Oil pump & cam belt a job that will just need looking at sometime?

Apologies, I'm a complete newbie!

Brake pipes separate job to oil pump.

Diesel D3 have an inherent fault with the oil pump.
If the casting fractures, the pistons and valve hit each other and the engine is scrap.
Engine costs over £4K plus labour to fit.

2007 models are guaranteed to have this weekness. So wanted to ensure you costed this.
Cambelt has to be removed to do oil pump. So fit a new belt at the same time

Cheers Pete.

It actually had a new engine at 41K see image.

What are you thoughts on this & any tips or things to lookout for on the test drive?

When it says corroded or covered in grease, it could actually be that - I coat mine in grease to stop corrosion occurring and have had this statement on the Mots for the last few as they are not allowed to remove the grease to see if there is corrosion underneath on the MOT test, so they put that advisory.

Normal practice would be to fail the pipe if it has corrosion that is weakening the pipework

It would be worth getting a garage to check before replacing. At that age the Flexi pipes should have been changed, and depending on when the engine was changed, it might be needing another replacement set of timing belts and fuel pump belt as it is every 7 years.

Also worth checking if the engine that was fitted was a genuine LR unit and what oil pump it has fitted, because if it was an early engine exchange (before 2009) there is a good possibility it had the old style oil pump fitted that had a weak casting. I noticed on the invoice a statement at the bottom of 12 months warranty, later genuine LR Replacement engines had I believe a 24 month warranty.
 Must stop buying shiny toys....
