If Flexible Brake hoses should be changed at 10 years, what limits their life - for sure weather, movement and potentially contact with brake fluid will be factors?

But crucially, does that mean old-stock parts are best avoided - e.g. would a new OEM replacement/pattern part be a better option than an 8-yr old Genuine part?

As they’re rubber pretty much anything affects them from road salt (nordics), to temperatures and how much you brake. Alternatively you can get stainless steel braided brake hoses, for example from HEL Performance or similar places.

Really, the brake fluid should be changed every 3 years or so. I know some people doing it every two but they’re driving quite a lot. Others do it every 4 years. Again, this isn’t included in anyone’s maintenance program so most likely you’ll be fine with an extra year. If it killed anyone they’d have it as a mandatory item.

For brake fluid, theoretically it will collect water. How much over how long time? Anyone’s guess. It is possible to test the boiling point with a tester however.

Thank you @kajtzu, though presumably replacement at 6 years is a recommendation rather than mandatory as I'm pretty sure LR doesn't do this as part of its service routines having reviewed my main dealer history?

I agree with all the factors you list affecting their service life, but my question is regarding shelf life where a hose will be not be exposed to any of those elements. The closest might be hardening of the rubber, similar to tyres, but isn't that primarily due to UV exposure which I wouldn't expect to be the case for a warehouse stored part.

So, I am still wondering which is preferrable - an 8-9 year old genuine LR hose or a new aftermarket one?

The recommended maintenance schedule is applicable in only the most slightest of duty. The schedules suggested here are far too lenient for a Canadian climate, let alone heavy duty either towing or off road.

Mall crawling, maybe.

But at 10 years, plastic and rubber breaks down significantly. Most fluids are long past their service cycle by then.
