Starter motor problems tdv6 |
|
Hi there all we have a disco 3 and the damn thing has just gave up on starting, we have ruled out any electrical problems no warning lights or anything, we removed the starter off the disco and with it on the floor and wired it up to the car with jump leads and it worked every single turn of the key no problem so we reinstalled the starter and it started up no problem first flick of the key left it running for 5 mins turned it off and now it won’t work start again any ideas will be great thanks

There is a relay in the fuse box under the bonnet marked SM.
Swap this for another relay (that you don't care about too much)

auto or manual ?
relays are a common problem and an easy/cheap to eliminate.
Another thing you can try, is to ensure the gearbox is in P or N.
Remove the SM relay
Bridge the 2 large contacts briefly. It will spark a little.
See if the starter turns over easily.

Earth lead?- test with a jump lead from battery to engine. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

It’s an auto
We have moved it from p to n multiple times
we have tried bypassing the relay but there was nothing no spark or anything but when we reinstalled the relay and removed the relay wire of the starter and put a volt meter on the wire we were getting nearly 12v going down to the starter so I presume the relays good
When we had the sm off the car we wired it up to the car using 3 jump leads ( being very carful with the live cables) and every time we turned the key the starter engaged like it was brand new but once on the car it worked fine then stopped working

Earth lead does sound likely
You could add a jump lead between starter body and battery -
To prove or disprove.
Disconnecting the thin lead and measuring 12v isn’t fool proof
Could still be a bad wire.
Measure when still connected to starter

Volts are nice, but what you need is power, you said no spark so that says to me you have an issue further back up the line.

Don't these starters have brushes so taking it out may have moved them and now they have settled back to normal position

Morning all went and tried turning the key just nothing put jump lead on bottom of starter and onto inner arch starts every time removed jump lead won’t start so I think it’s going to be an earth problem thanks for all the information

Well done with the earth strap. There is a position on the front of the engine where you can bolt an earth strap.
