It really irritates me! Toyota Aygo seem to be the biggest culprit so far where I live.
Or the opposite end of the spectrum where some knob parks on the wrong side of the road and leaves their headlights on. Banging Head

Wow, I don't remember writing that article, but there it is - my thoughts written out for others to see.

Yeah, I agree with him wholeheartedly.

A simple way would be to just have all cars have a light switch with two settings "auto" and "on". Then the brain dead would have the car turn the lights on as it gets dark, the rest of us can choose to turn the lights on sooner if we wish.

The simplest way is just to have the lights on all the time. With LEDs the life of the bulb isn't the issue is was back in the day. LEDs typically have lifetimes of tens of thousands of hours which, in reality, means they won't fail during the lifetime of the vehicle. So just have all cars have dipped beams and tail lights on when the engine is running.

I never really understood the point of 'Dim Dip' systems in the 1990s, either.

By 'Dim Dip' do you mean sidelights and dipped headlights? Sidelights used to be called position lights I think, and are useful if one is parked in an unlit street. They are required to be illuminated if you park on the side of a road (or in a layby adjacent) which has a speed limit over 30mph or parked on any road when there is fog. How many people do that, I wonder? Of course, if your battery isn't in good condition, they're not so helpful. Rolling with laughter

This was a thing where if you switched on your sidelights with the ignition on the headlights were dimmed to about 20% by wiring them through a resistor. The theory was that it prevented driving just with sidelights and reduced glare/shadows when driving in urban areas. One of those 'seemed a good idea at the time / probably a French idea' things. I can't recall many (any) people intentionally using it!
