So one of mine went today, seems they are a common product is it likely to be just the bulb or is there a separate ballast please ? seems the fuses never blow on these ?

the fuses don't blow ... because there aren't any !
it's protected by MOSFET transistors which cut the power if too much current flows ... which is why a CCF edit allows you to fit Xenons into a car that started life with halogen units.
Not sure about the ballasts being a point of failure... more likely the bulb though. were there any signs of aging ? "discoloured" is the norm as they age. .
