Recall issued - parking brakes and jacks - nothing too serious.

LR recall D3's for park brake / jack

http://www.whatcar.co.uk/News_Article.asp?NA_ID=217713

Nice to see LR get round to some things eventually.

These issues must be legally potentially costly enough to have to resort to a recall.

Compressors, suspension, software, electrics etc, obviously just a thorn in the side of us as customers, and not likely to lead to enough damaging litigation from big corporate insurance companies.

P.S. Sorry missed previous thread in technical. This link to What Car? story

Land Rover is recalling more than a thousand cars for checks on parking brakes and jacks.

In the biggest of the two recalls, Land Rover wants to examine the parking brakes of automatic Discovery 3, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models.

It has found that, even when the operating lever is moved into the 'park' position, and indicators suggest the car has been secured, the brake may not be applied. This could leave the vehicle free to roll away, although the electronic parking brake is not affected and should always be engaged.

In all, 881 cars are potentially affected by this defect, which is caused by a sub-standard component in the system.

In the second recall, 200 other coil-sprung Discovery 3 cars, as opposed to those with air suspension, have been found to have been supplied with the wrong type of jack.

The vehicles need a screw and bottle-type jack instead of the scissor design which has been provided, and can cause an unladen vehicle to become unstable when lifted for a wheel change.

Land Rover says there have been no reports of owners having experienced either of the potential faults, and so no accidents or injuries as a result.

VIN Range LA 354299 to LA 361594 are affected. This is a transmission issue, not parking brake.

The parking pawl guide plate recall was announced late last month for us in the states. (For LR3, Range Rover Sport & Range Rover.)

If you'd like to see the "recall" details for North America... visit these PDF files:

http://199.79.180.163/prepos/files/Artemis...2-3546.PDF

It describes the issue fairly well. Thank you, ZF. Confused

Recall via VOSA website -PARKING FUNCTION OF THE AUTO TRANS

I haven't noticed this mentioned here. Apologies if it has. It can from the VOSA website:
http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/s...AC0046F35F

Reference : R/2005/156
Manufacturer Ref : A023
Make: LAND ROVER
Model : Discovery 3, Range Rover & Range Rover Sport
Launch Date : 09/11/2005
Numbers Involved : 881
Build Start Date : 16/08/2005
Build End Date : 15/09/2005

Concern : THE PARKING FUNCTION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MAY NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY
Description : Due to the presence of an out of specification component within the automatic gearbox parking brake interlock system. The parking function may not fully engage when the operating lever is moved to park, despite all indicators showing that park has been achieved. If the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll away.
Remedial Action : Recalled vehicles will have the out of specification component replaced with a quality assured item.

regards
Rob

Does your VIN number fall into the affected range?

Yes they have to make all reasonable efforts to contact you. It will probably take a while, and they will not notify everyone at once or the dealers will be swamped.

I remember when my S2 Disco was recalled for ABS issues, it was done incredibly efficiently. The dealer was spot on and used the opportunity of having lots of Disco 2 owners who would not otherwise visit a main dealer, in the showroom. They had lots of deals on offer, and it was this recall visit for my S2 that got me talking to the sales manager about the then about to be launched D3! I blagged an invite to the launch event at Jodrell Bank, and bought one shortly after.

So from Land Rovers point of view it is a good opportunity to build customer relations.
