Replace engine oil sump pan

Hi all.

Will attempt to do this myself. Seems straightforward enough and keen to get any thoughts and tips.

Engine oil sump is badly corroded and is leaking. Have purchased a replacement.

Read the workshop manual which explains:
1. Drain oil
2. Remove bottom engine cover
3. Remove oil temperature sensor
4. Remove sump & gasket
5. Clean gasket mounting surface
6. Replace sump & gasket evenly adjusting all screws

I had a few questions though:
- Tips on how to remove the old pan if stuck?
- What's the o-ring specification for the temperature sensor? I'll need to buy one regardless, can't seem to find which one to buy (not too keen to get one of those £5 boxes from Amazon)
- Any tips on how to properly seal the gasket? Saw people apply a think silicone line to secure it to the pan before fitting it. Others suggest a thin layer of grease.
- Other than visual inspection - how best to ensure it is not leaking after finishing?

Oil temp sensors do fail so consider now a good time to replace.
I think it’s seal is a copper washer ??

The gasket is metal. No sealant should be required


Are you sure it’s not leaking above the black sump ?

Sump will likely be stuck the the gasket, which in turn is stuck to the crankcase, but not by much. A good thump with a fist will knock it off. Catch it though, as there will still be oil in it Laughing

O-ring for the sensor is the same as the sump plug, which is available as a separate part Thumbs Up

Gasket should not be fitted with any grease or sealant. It's one thing they actually got very right. Tighten evenly, and to the specified torque setting

Thanks for the tips.

Removed the cover and drained the oil + removed the filter for easier flow. Every single screw came out no problem (I was genuinely surprised!). The pan itself came off just by gently tapping it.

Too good to be true?

Well, yes, I fitted the new pan and gasket, new sensor and plug. Torqued up. Then added oil... the f-ing pan had a bend in between two bolts which I didn't notice, ended up spilling about 1L of oil on my driveway and all over me. Completely ruined my day.

Fitted the old one back as I don't want to leave it exposed and expect to get a new one, hopefully soon. It's a good thing the Disco is not my daily driver, otherwise I would be proper Censored off.

New sump & gasket arrived and are now fitted. No leaks.

...Only to get one of the 14 bolts snap while torquing.

I will have to extract and replace it before being driven. Rule going forward is to buy new bolts anytime I need to replace something else. Did not expect this level of corrosion.
