Maybe the AA man didnt know and im surprised your friend hasnt told you! The handbrake can be released mechanically ditto the transmission park its in the manual if you look for it. For exactly that situation

So there is. Thanks for that, I wish I’d have known that earlier. Been I touch with a few places now, the ones that have got back so far are not taking anything on till the end of June.

Ok, so the worst of my fears were confirmed. It wasn’t the timing belt, it was an oil pump failure, resulting in a crank seizure. On further inspection, they found metal filings in the oil cooler and excessive play in the turbo. It never rains does it
