Central Locking Fuse Blowing |
|
Morning all.
Disco has developed a recurring issue with blown central locking fuses and I'm looking for some guidance.
About 9 months ago I replaced both rear door lock actuators and did the green wire splice to resolve central locking issues. Car was fine until about a month ago when the central locking stopped working again. Having spent hours pulling apart the trim in the belief I needed to redo the splice, I realised the fuse had blown. Replaced it and all worked fine for a week and then it went again. Replaced fuse and repeat, this time it lasted about 2 weeks.
I'm thinking it may be related to the rear passenger door actuator which doesn't get used very often but before I go replacing it, does anyone know if a dodgy actuator could cause the fuse to blow? I checked that door after I last replaced the fuse and it worked fine.
Thanks in advance! D3 2.7 TDV6 HSE

If an actuator is stuck in an energised state, it will continue to draw its max working current. Over time that circuit would get warm, which raises resistance and eventually you pop the fuse.
That's one possible explanation.
Can you check what current is being drawn on the Central Locking circuit with a multimeter? Anything other than nil when the car is just sat unlocked is a sign something isn't right and you have an open circuit somewhere. Pulsing drain would point to it being an actuator, but isn't conclusive. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Thanks for the info.
I can get hold of a multimeter but electrics aren't my strong suit! Where would I need to put the red cable to test the central locking circuit? I gather the black cable goes on the battery. D3 2.7 TDV6 HSE

I don’t know how many people you carry around or doors you use regularly.
But I was thinking.
Add some fuel to the tank.
Ensure the windows are closed.
Disconnect the wiring to the 3 passenger doors on the hinge post.
Not sure how
Drive around for 2 weeks or so.
When the fuse blows again you know it’s not those 3 doors and they can be reconnected.
If the fuse does not blow, reconnect one door at a time starting with the door you use most. Until the fuse blows.

So pretty sure the issue is linked to the rear passenger door actuator.
Anyone know how I can disconnect this without having to strip down the entire door? D3 2.7 TDV6 HSE
