Black Headlining - Will D4 Sunvisors fit a D3?
My headlining has started to deteriorate and I was thinking of getting it redone. Has anyone replaced their headlining with a black one?2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

No, but I’ve got a black headlining in my FFRR.
I like it, but if I had to choose I think I’d be torn. My FFRR has a panoramic though. I think black might feel a bit too oppressive in a Disco.
Tricky, as you’ll not know until you’ve done it.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I did sew a velvet dark brown ceiling for my Peugeot 504. A lot of work as it was a completely different ceiling structure compared to ceilings today which are moulded. Today I would spay glue with 3M Super 77, but I think you will need a couple of people to help holding material in a taut state. The dark ceiling looked good, but I think black maybe just a bit too dark. So look at a charcoal tone, darkish grey, but look carefully at the underlying colour of the grey, the right cold or warmth of the grey tone could go wrong if not careful.
Don't forget to sew covers for the sun visors or they will look out of place.
Watch the grain of the velvet.
I also built an overhead console with the first car CD play available. Coat a fortune at the time. Made the KEF GT200 setup & multiple amplifiers look cheap. Also had onboard air to raise the rear air shocks about 50mm. Great for a tonne of blue metal in the boot. Not to forget refrigerator which held 6 cans.
Disclaimer. My Freelander has almond interior, wood trim & white ceiling which I really like. Looks very classy. Can't raise the car like the Peugeot but it does have a 28L fridge. Swings & roundabouts!Visitor - Freelander owner
My mechanic has a plan to fit a black headliner in one of his Golfs ... complete with 100s of LEDs for a sky at night effect.
Apparently, in the world of Golfs, it's cheaper to obtain whole headlinings than individual parts fitted to them, so he has several to practice on..

I think you’d want to find one that’s been done and sit in it before doing it, as LT says they can be quite oppressive inside, I went to look at a Range Rover and the black headlining was the deal breaker as it was so dark inside and didn’t find it a nice experience

Would love to have an all black roof lining ..... just hate that standard taupe colour.
Already blacked out my pano glass roof sections and sunroof.
Thought about black dye for the lining but the plastic pillar trim would need to be removed and sprayed black too.
So sadly came to the conclusion it's all just too much hassle!! ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I have had my ceiling down about half a dozen times. After about the 3rd go I can have the car ripped apart & back together in an hour. I think now I could pretty much do it blindfolded. Starting with the boot sill, it's as extreme as this due to the order of removing trim panels.

I’ve got a black headlining in my Disco and a Merc GLE both with no panoramic roof. It’s probably a bit darker, but you get used to it to the point you don’t really notice it and I like it.

Cheers guys. Thanks for all those thoughts.
I'm probably going to have someone do the main headlining for me. I have yet to choose the material though.
I hope to spray the plastic parts myself, as I am OK with spraying plastic.
One awkward bit is deciding what to do about the sunvisors, which could be dyed black, except for the fact that if you touch them the material tends to leave marks for a while. If I got them re-covered, I would have to disassemble them and paint the plastic parts before re-assembling them. It might be difficult to find someone who can re-cover them.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

I had black headliners for all my mercedes that I used to own, and sitting in my D4 now feels really weird with the beige headlining. I would also like to go with black but with all the beige trims I got (yes, my interior is beige), I'm not sure if it's going to be worth the time... The hard plastic will be a pain to pain over I would imagine.

I sewed them inside out for my Peugeot. Sew one with some rubbish material as a template, if you have to sew a few to get the size exactly right so be it. Then hand stitch the end near the hinge, or sew in some Velcro (sewing Velcro make sure you use nonstick)Visitor - Freelander owner

Black Headlining? - Will D4 Sunvisors fit a D3?
Would anyone know if the D4 sunvisors will fit a D3? If so, I might get some from a scrappie and then have a go with one of my old ones to dye it with something like Autobrite Black Dye, which will dye the fabric and may even dye the plastic. Be interesting to see.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

I've got the panoramic roof as well. A local guy will do my headlining and the pillars which have fabric on. I will need to dye the sunvisors black and then paint the remaining plastic pieces black.
I'm going to double check by visiting our local dealer and looking inside some new ones with black headlinings.
Just hope that I don't come out with a brand new something or other like I did last time I bought a caravan having gone for a new tap for the old one.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575
