Hello
I test drove a D4 a few days ago and was contemplating what it was I didn't like about it.
Have owned a D3 and 2x D4s, and none had the same noise.
Car started nicely, very little exhaust noise, nice tick-over.
Pulled away, and perhaps because the car was cold, the first to second gear change was a 'snatch' rather than a smooth pull away, like something had got caught. It was the same through the gears until the car was warm. Once warm it accelerated well and the gears were smooth.
However, once warm, there was a viceral hum from the centre front of the car, in addition to the noise of the engine, and remained whilst driving and when stationary.
The car had a full service history.
I did not buy the car though am intrigued, for future reference, to know where that noise might have come from. It was slightly nausea inducing.

seems that a hum from the gearbox area is not uncommon and likely diff on the way out or prop shaft?

Don't dismiss tyres either, I've had some very concerning noises that I expected to be transmission or prop related and turned out to be a tyre out of shape..

Thanks @beanoir
I did think tyres and/or bearings but the drone also happens when the car is stationary.

how old was this vehicle as when i test drove my 2013 it had a rattle/drone and i was convinced it was coming from the air compressor (im pretty good with spanners) so negotiated a new one to be fitted before i purchased anyway when i drove it home after purchasing it it was still making the noise so after a few hours investigation on my drive it turned out to be the baffles rattling inside the middle silencer which there was a recall for
long story shortened i took it back and after lots of arguing with land rover the fitted a new centre section
turns out my car was too old for the recall to be applied even though they said it was the recall problem but the recall fix time had expired typical lr customer service for you but worth a look please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou
current vehicles 2005 d3 2013 d4

It was 2016.
The drone/him/throbbing was definitely coming from the area just in front of the gear selector housing.
It was very a very low level but audible hum and as mentioned was quite nauseating like the throb of the engine when on a ferry.

This sounds similar to my car (2016 D4), it's made a low level 'throbbing' sound on warm idle since I bought it on 22k miles, it's now on 65k and still does it, I've mentioned it a few times when it's been in with LR as my previous 2 D4's didn't do it, but they can't find any fault. As said, i've covered 40k+ miles in it and it hasn't caused a problem, I just find it a bit annoying!
