4.0 Petrol V6 EGR fault

Hi all

I know that there are not many on here with the 4.0 L V6 petrol Cologne engine.

I just had some difficulties starting (from cold). When it did finally get going, by pumping the accelerator I got the attached fault codes. Can I assume the EGR valve is on its way out. Once I cleared the codes it's starting no problem. Strong smell of unburnt petrol.

It did this to me a couple of weeks ago as well.

I've just done 159,000 km (100,000 miles)

I can get an EGR valve on line from the UK (LR012028) for GBP237.38 plus shipping to New Zealand from LRparts. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the MAF sensor is part of this as well?

Does anyone have an experience replacing this? Looks a relatively simple job. Anything I need to watch out for?

Thanks
Blake

Hi Blake,

I was travelling down from Auckland last weekend so just got to see this.

I had the EGR valve on my 4.0L Petrol V6 replaced at 98000km or thereabouts. This was triggered by my IID showing a P017400 code.

I went to a dealer to fix this so I don’t know how easy it was, but the labour cost was nominal, about 150% of what they charged me for replacing the bonnet gas strut thingy (which I let them do as they were kind enough to replace the EGR valve over Christmas).

Shortly afterwards, the same code started reappearing, so we suspected a faulty MAF sensor. PHF000140 was the unit quoted by the dealer, costing a similar amount to the EGR valve (they didn’t charge any labour cost that time round it seems, looking at my invoice).

This cleared the fault altogether, and until now there hasn’t been any problems.

To from what I learnt from the dealer, the job seems to be relatively straightforward. The parts do seem to be sold separately (at least my dealer charged separately) so if this is the case you might consider getting both parts at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, yes that helps heaps!

I've got my terminology mixed up reading the on line workshop manual.

I misread MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure), which is part of the EGR valve with MAF (Mass air flow)

I can now see where the MAF sensor is, just to the right of the air intake filter box.

I've just been talking on the phone with my Indie garage man. If it is the EGR he is quoting me about $900 NZD to come in from overseas. I can purchase on line ex UK for GBP237 which is about $458 NZD which is about half the price he is quoting. I told him that and he said its middle men taking their cut.

I've got it booked in with the garage on Thursday for him to diagnose properly (hopefully).

Either way if its the EGR or the MAF sensor at fault he is happy to fit if I buy and get the mechanic to fit. EGR is a couple of bolts and a pipe. I know my luck I'll snap a bolt off trying to undo and be in a bigger predicament.

Anyway do you live in NZ or are you on holiday? I'm just out of New Plymouth in the Taranaki.

Thanks Blake

Thanks. From what you have been quoted in NZ, I don’t think the price to be that unreasonable. I Have been living here for about a year now, and for any international shipments, the shipping cost almost doubles the parts price. So if you are able to get a unit from the UK for £237 (ex VAT?), I would expect the shipping cost to be similar, and you may be charged import duty on top. With the current exchange rate I don’t see the final price being much cheaper than the NZ$900 your indie man’s quote. But I may well be wrong, so do let me know if you managed to get it significantly cheaper.

Also, let me know if you know of a competent indie garage around Wellington. They may be good but I think the dealers here are a bit steep, so I’ll be willing to seek an indie with expertise in the 4.0L petrol model!

Thanks for getting back to me.

I've just gone back onto LRparts.net where I can buy the ERG for GBP237 (Sorry I can't find the pound symbol on my keyboard!)
When I add to cart and select NZ it gives a shipping quote of GBP37.00 (DHL express worldwide). No mention of import tax or GST, which gives a total of GBP284.

I've brought a few things from the UK for the Disco (Powerful UK D4 stye grill, LED interior lights, door puddle lights and from Britishparts.co.uk a suspension air compressor). Always been between 25-50% cheaper than sourcing in NZ.

As for a good Indie in Wellington, I have no idea. Even the mechanic I use in NP knows very little about Discos, just doesn't see that many of them. I'm glad I brought the GAP IID tool, as I feel I am armed with some knowledge before walking through the door. I think he is an honest guy, not trying to over charge me.

If you are ever up in this neck of the wood, send me a PM. Likewise if I'm down Welly way are you interested to chat (I don't know anyone else with a Disco, and would love to compare notes).

Cheers
Blake

With most of the UK based suppliers they leave the Duty/GST up tp you since it depends on your countries import regs, here in Aus anything under AUD1000 you dont need to pay duty but technically liable for GST although if the seller doesnt collect it at time of payment it slips thru without.
Anything over AUD1000 the cost snowballs quickly.

Thanks Blake,

It’s good to know that it’s possible to import cheaper. My experience with (fleec)e-bay has been for the final cost to approximately double after buying any goods from the UK, so perhaps it’s only true for that particular site.

To my pleasant surprise I encountered more D3s here in NZ than I expected, so it is all the more disappointing there is not many indie specialists around here. I guess I’ll need to take it up to Auckland for a petrol V6 specific issues. I am really glad that I bought my GAP IID while I was in the UK, it’s really helpful to have one around.

Sure, will send you a PM as it’ll be good to swap notes.

Cheers

Just to close off this thread, in case anyone stumbles upon it in the future.

I ordered the EGR/MAP valve for my 4.0 L V6 petrol engine. Got my garage to fit it. One month later and the engine is starting perfectly, problem solved.

Regards Blake
