| Cb aerial ground with a roofrack |
|
Hiya all, I'm in the middle of fitting a cb set up to my disco, now my question is I'm running a front runner roofrack and I have the matching front runner cb aerial mount, I'm only using a small orbiter aerial on the mount, do I need to give it an extra ground being as it's bolted to the rack or is it not worth worrying about, anybody know??? Thanks in advance.

I can't give a definite answer, but I'm in the same boat and my plan is to test continuity between the rack and the battery. Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

If its anything like mine mate I've got continuity on the earth in the cable, but between aerial base etc and the body I've got nothing unless I put a cable between the two, which I know is an option but I don't want to faff about adding extra cable if its for not a lot of gain if you know what I mean, I tried the cb as is and I've tried it with a loosely set up extra earth cable between the aerial base and the body and to be honest it didn't really make much difference either way.

I’ve got my aerial clapped straight to the roof rails with no issues and have seen a fair few the same so as long as the rack has clean contact to the rail I can’t see a problem? 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

No I can't see an issue either really, what's making me question it tho is I read somewhere that an aerial that has no ground is bad for the cb and has the potential to fry it, how true that is I don't know?, thing is the front runner rack is powdercoated so well that obviously nothing gets thru it and I ain't about to start taking paint off to get a shiny patch lol

If your worried, just drop a 3 inch earth wire from the aerial to the roof rail, should be good. 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

You need the aerial mounted above the roof rack so it acts as a ground plane, which is a flat surface that will reflect the radio waves that come down from the antenna. You shouldn’t need to worry about creating an electrical ground like an earth - it’s not quite the same thing.
What you do need to do is test your installation with an SWR meter. As long as the SWR value is less than 2 then it’s fine.

Gotya  the way the frontrunner bracket fits it defiantly puts the aerial above the rack so that's a good start, I'll get hold of a swr meter, thanks for that information mate.

Cheers for the offer mate I mite just take you up on that offer at some point I'm south birmingham(halesowen), but you ain't far away, trouble I've got at the mo tho is finding the time, I'm flat out at the mo with work, my trades supposed to be quiet this time of year but since lockdown it's just got busier and busier
