Decisions - scrap or reconditioned engine ? |
|
So my 2012 128K D4 decided to die within the space of 200 yards a couple of weeks ago, I've only had it 14 months - had an impeccable service history etc etc and it's in lovely condition.
It cost me about 18K - which is almost exactly what LR Inverness want to put a new engine in - they've simply charged me £160 to say they've found metal particles in the oil so it needs a new engine.
When I had it recovered to them (no one else that farnorth would even look at it) it ran, but a bit lumpy and wouldn't go forwards, but did reverse - so I'd convinced myself that it was GB related.
So, assuming I can get it to somewhere that'll put me a reconditioned engine in (I'll be ringing MMP in the morning) ....
... am I daft to be even considering spending £xyz on getting back on the road ?
I'm thinking 5k might get me a reconditioned engine, a bit of warranty and a few more years out of it.

Sorry to hear this and DM is definitely your best bet... if you have full LR history it's always worth asking the dealer to see if there's a possibility of a goodwill gesture from LR... you never know... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Sadly full LR history is only upto about 90k
... and I've just noticed I'm paying £650/Yr road tax !
Might just get it recovered home and keep chickens in it.

Cheers Moo, I'm not totally ruling out sourcing an engine and doing it myself, but I vowed 5 years ago, having spent a few decades keeping all sorts of dependers and series landies running, including chassis stops, to never touch a spanner again.
So there's a few issues, I'm very north and across the water so even getting it home won't be a trivial task, and then there's the russian roulette of sourcing a good engine and then when it goes wrong again there's no one here that'll touch them
I'll see what MMP suggest, it's not the first D4 I've had and when they work there's very few better vehicles ....

MMP suggest a factory recon lump
2 year nationwide parts and labour warranty
Not the cheapest option, but certainly cheaper than the £18k others are quoting My D3 Build Thread

To endorse what others have already said:
I had similar happen to my 180k mile D3 and had MMP fit a new JLR engine to it. Full description here:
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/chassis-sus...65489.html
Today the car has just passed its MOT, current mileage now 283k and rising (7k since November) so for me the investment was very worthwhile. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
Previously:
TD5 Defender 110 CSW (230k miles)
300TDi Disco 1 (289k)
4 RR Classics (300-350k each, 2 manual, 2 auto)
110 V8 CSW (220k)
S3 109 hi cap pickup (ex RN)
S2A 88 Safari SW with lpg conversion (bloody lethal)
