The dealer quoted me £800 to replace a non working key as he wants to replace the entire set and receiver. Is there a SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper way to do this?

Buy another fob from Ebay with a blank key, get the key cut by a local locksmith and then speak nicely to someone with a professional IID (unless you have your own registered to the car?) to reprogramme it for you... total cost should be less than £50... make sure the fob you buy is 433mhz... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Hi,
you have started the thread in a "D4" section but you have a 2005 D3 in your profile
so use right section or update profile would help and narrow down the options,
Mikey's comment should be noted ^

When you say it doesn't work, any idea why, is it the battery that needs replacing??
Talk to RRUK who offers a key repair service on here. His service is first class and he will keep you informed and confirm if he can help.
