Tom Tom

The "what did I do in my D3 today" thread seems to be broken .. so started this..

Thursday, my meeting finished early, and I was in Newport and heading for Hereford .. So I told tom to find me the shortest route between current and planned.. rather than the usual fastest metaled road route.

Well, have to say I'm not so much of a newbie in terms of off roading now ( with the 4th coming up ). Got to try Hill desent for real, first click on the dial for slippy stuff going back up it, and low range up a slippy bit that I'm sure wasn't really a road. I'd put money on some of the 'tracks' tom took me down hadn't seen anything motorised in a LONG while ..

I have no idea where I was or the route I took, other than Wales, but I did see the odd farm here or there, and put complete faith in the D3, Bill Gates, Tom Tom and the xda, and out I popped eventually on a main road into Hereford.

Only took me another 45 mins than the fasted route should have, but it was 45 mins of playing with the toys rather than listening to the R4 afternoon play on way home.

So, to clean it or not to clean it ( with the 4th coming up ) ... ??

Nah .. looks better dirty..

Don't know about Tom Tom, but I have just got an HP Ipaq with built in GPS receiver, to which I have added Memory Map, with OS 1:50000 maps of Wales and Northern England, it is very good indeed. (you may have seen it in the pub the other week, but that was before I worked out the gps!) It has all the byways, rupps, ucr's, etc, as per normal OS map. It shows the exact location, on a moving OS map.

You still must check the status of the lanes with the council before driving though, as even OS maps can be wrong.

Only downside is that battery lasts for not very long at all with the gps running, needs a car charger.

I got fed up of the iPaq's battery running out very quickly when running TomTom or Memory Map (both utterly brilliant programs) and so bought a very acceptable iPaq car charger from eBay for not much money at all.

I've now got a TomTom in-car cradle for the MINI (sticks to the glass, and will power the Bluetooth GPS and the iPaq at the same time) and a hardwired Brodit cradle in the 90 (you might have seen it in Wales, otherwise http://www.web-rover.co.uk/nav.php?p=gallery&view=98)
