Charging fault

Hi all

Discovery 4 2010 XS

Red triangle and red battery signal on the dash, checking for faults and this code came up P0A1A-87(2F) control module missing a message, any ideas, we are off with grand children next week for Easter so pretty desperate 😩 cleared the fault and 1 minute later it popped back up ?

Generator issue on the Alternator.

I would check what voltage you have at the battery using a multi meter, normal non running vehicle youd expect to see around 12.6 to 12.9v

then I'd check and see what you get with it when the vehicle is running, should be around 14.6v

have you changed battery recently or let it go flat?

Thanks for the reply

New Battery fitted and BMS reset recently, battery 12.7 volts, when engine running 13.9 volts.

Did a bit of searching as there is another code popped up B1087(2f) Bus A component failure, from this I did a check as there is a single wire that runs from the alternator to the positive terminal on the battery, battery connection OK, jacked up the front and see below what seems to be a broken wire close to the alternator, next question is how to get to repair this if it is the problem, can you, by removing lots of parts, get to it from the top of the engine, over to the experts, really need this fixed, thanks.

Wee update

I have searched the internet and come up with a YouTube video about a TSB that came out re P0A1A-87, it explains the charging system and the fix for this fault, I performed the fix but it has not solved my predicament, interesting video though.

What I have proved is that my system is charging the battery all be it maybe less than normal
.

Is it safe to drive the vehicle? Do I remove the Alternator, is this broken wire the single wire to the alternator, some body must have had this before (surely). 🤔

What a morning

Alternator out and broken wire, but where does it connect to, can’t find a loose end, does it connect to the battery + cable from the starter, or is there a connection back to the ECU, can someone please help

Found this:

Thanks jensoneverest

Eventually found the offending broken wire, would you believe way up above the starter motor, a bit tricky to get to lying on your back, but eventually managed to put a bridge piece in as it was to short to reach the LIN connection in the alternator, gave up as it was getting dark, will be really Censored ed off if this is not the problem, revisit tomorrow and struggle to get the dam thing back in, I’m getting to old for this, Land Rover don’t think about an OAP removing an Alternator 😀

Hi all

Well, alternator back in, but after 30-40 seconds the fault re-appeared, managed to find a garage who have checked the real time loads on the system and they say the system is charging and the load is normal, although the garage say the system is charging I don’t want to take it on a 250 mile trip, have another vehicle so D4 parked up until we return, please if anyone has ideas as to the problem please post, this will be the first time for me the forum seems to be stumped 🤔

Well, it’s been a while but problem solved, I eventually found a garage who seemed to know what was the resolve to the charging fault lights on the dash.
I have been driving with the fault always appearing after about 50 seconds and charging the battery at 13.6v with no ill effects that I know of.
Garage confirmed the fault lay with the LIN bus, they cut the existing wire and fitted another connector with an overlay wire from C3069M-4 to the generator, cleared faults, have now done 70 miles and the fault has not returned and battery charging at 14.3v, happy days 👍😀
