Driving to/in France 2023 - Latest?

Hi all

Been a few years for me but we're ditching the airports and driving to France for a long holiday in August. Looking around the internet, the latest list I can gather is

- V5, Insurance, MOT all printed out (will have cloud copies too)
- Breakdown cover
- Hi-viz for all people, in door pockets
- Triangle
- Spare bulb kit
- UK sticker

Seems there is no need for those little breathalysers anymore and also I see not to drive in flip flops (not that I ever would)

I'm not bothering with toll tags etc as we are pretty much driving there, then back to the ferry, and that will be it for 12 months at least.

What have I forgotten?

Only thing missing is a well filled wallet for fines!

Also,I'd just get a toll pass for the shear convenience. It's less than tenner per year but just so much easier.

Laughing

On the tolls, I just thought that basically for two (ok, long) journeys it wasn't worth the faff? Can you just get one tag? I've seen a few different types mentioned. If it's literally £10 and it takes me less than half an hour to apply for one thing, I'll consider it

Just googled it and got Ulys, Tollbird, Emovis, Liber-T....... Confused

Ditto the toll pass (we use Sanef) - it can make a significant difference on a long journey, or even just when passing round a large conurbation during peak times, and allows the passenger to continue to snooze.

Plus you can stream past what seems like kms or standing traffic waiting to pay at the non tag bits, then straight through the tag bays sometimes without even stopping. Deffo worth their weight in fresh croissants and vin rouge. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

End enjoy getting to France. Hope the French border dudes, both of them, are not pratting around too much. Thumbs Up

So it doesn't matter which toll system you have as long as you just choose one of them? Is Sanef the best one to go for?

I think the system works on the basis of one pass works for all, but please check/confirm that!

I drove down to Meribel and back in February and wafted through all the peages with the tag, by-passing some extensive queues at times. The other advantage is that you get all of the charges to pay in a single transaction, rather than multiple payments being made on a card or fiddling around with cash.

I have used Sanef for more than a decade, mainly because they have a UK administration centre based in Yorkshire with UK support available - not that I have needed. Our original tags were superceded a year or two ago and renewing them with current models was very straightforward.

Right then, I've just applied for a Sanef Liber-T "Bip&Go" tag which only charges €1.70 per month of use and €0 otherwise. The tag was just €10 but there was also €10 postage so €20 overall. Application took about 5 mins, good system. I had to provide an IBAN account number and sign the equivalent of a DD mandate for payment. I'm hoping that there are no hidden conversion charges at my bank end.

Thanks for the advice! Thumbs Up

Now need to figure out where to put the tag on an L405 as I've never been able to get the M6 toll one to work and have to hold it out the window!!

Depending on where you intend to drive you might need a Crit’Air sticker.

Good shout, CritAir is needed for a lot of places now, with all connurbations >150k inhabitants being required to introduce restrictions by 2025

I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Supposedly, in 2024 Crit’Air 2 (Euro 4 petrols, ALL euro 5 and euro 6 diesels) will be banned in greater Paris area. They have been postponing the previous (Crit’Air 3) ban at least twice already so it might not happen quite yet.

Applied for a Crit’Air registration in May. Car sticker only took 7 days to arrive by post from France and cost just over £4 inc postage. Very efficient. Apply online and Be ready to send a photo of your registration document.

Same goes for Germany, in case you happen to go there.

You need to add travel/health insurance to your list.
