Short Stops - Low Oil Pressure |
|
Hi All,
Made an observation on my Disco 4 2015 when checking the oil filter...
Ambient temperature around 25 degrees C.
Having done around 60 minutes of constant driving on mixed roads. Engine definitely at full operating temperature. Oil pressure sits at 1.2 bar idle, 2.5 bar at 2k rpm. Oil temp 96 degrees. All seems normal to me.
Engine was stopped for 15 minutes. (wanted to inspect oil filter 200 miles after engine rebuild)
On start up: Oil pressure was 0.8 bar idle, 1.8 bar at 2k rpm. Oil temp 112 degrees. After 5 minutes of driving, temps and pressures return to previous "normal" ranges.
I repeated the above test again (Without the oil filter inspection) and noted the same pattern.
My thoughts are that:
When engine is running at full temp... pully driven fan is working, coolant circulating around engine, oil circulating through oil cooler etc
However, when the engine stops, all the above stops too. To me it seems that the residual heat around the engine transfers it's way through to the coolant and oil. This is heating the oil up by a few degrees thinning the oil temporarily until temperatures settle with the engine running again.
I am thinking about installing a thermostatic controlled electric radiator fan which will be wired directly to the battery so that it will kick in once temperatures reach a certain point.
Any thoughts on anything above?
