Steering Wheel Judder and Rubber Smell

Morning All, hopefully you can help me out. Driving along last night at 50MPH suddenly get a very noticeable steering wheel judder/vibration which stopped after 30 seconds or so then came back, went off, came back etc etc. Initially though wheel/tyre issue but after getting home I had a strong hot rubber smell coming from the vehicle.

Car has just been through full service and had rear prop shaft replaced.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Stretch.

First thought would be binding brake caliper. Did you see if any of the wheels were hot when you parked up? Fairly common issue

Hi there, thanks for the response. I felt all four tyres but none seemed noticeably hot. I’ll get the wheels off and have a better look at the discs to double check. Thanks.

Hi
It wouldn’t be the tyre that gets hot but the alloy wheel around the central section- think of a ring around where the wheel bolts are radiating outwards the as this is where the wheel is bolted to the brake disk behind it - the brake disk will become very hot if the brakes are binding whilst the car is being driven

Carefully touch, or nearly touch, the centre of the wheel (not the tyre) with the back if your hand. If it’s more than luke warm then you’ve got a biding calliper.

Check the propshaft that’s just been replaced.

Thumbs Up

Glad to hear it... I had the same problem not so long ago, though it didn't get as bad as wheel judder, just very hot wheel and stinky brake smell that I noticed when topping the tyres up with air.
