(DONE!) Rear callipers, replace both or only sticky side? |
|
I'm into a brake binding issue on my D3 and did an inspection tonight.
Guides were ok but the pads were very worn under 1cm left and the disks look bad too. Im guessing then that the calliper is stuck as i hear they do that if they get towards the end of travel.
So far I think a set of disks and pads is required and a calliper on the stuck side. But should I do the other side that's "ok" (obvs disks/pads but calliper?)?
Also any recommendations on makes for the calliper?

What makes you think the calliper is sticking? - does it get hot?- is one side brake pads worn more than the opposite wheel?- how many miles since they where fitted?
Brake pads and discs will obviously wear the more mileage they have done!- changing both callipers won’t do any harm and may prevent future issues but might not be necessary.
If both pads on both wheels are worn similarly and one side does not get hotter than the other I wouldn’t change the calipers.
p.s. do not touch the brakes or discs with your bear hands to check the temp, you will get burnt. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I would always do brakes and suspension components in pairs.

Unss do we 1CM more like 5mm, so not terrible but worth doing, if it wasn’t for the sticking I probably would be in a hurry to change them. I’ll try to rule out all other issues before the calliper, but it’s looking like that’s it. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Either the calliper is sticking or it isn’t, if it is best to change it or it will cause excessive wear on the new components. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

As long as the other side is working properly, they don’t need to be the same age. I replaced the offside front calliper earlier this year for sticking due to corrosion, the near side was just cleaned and inspected. Simon.

Whilst you are doing it I would get them both done, otherwise you will be replacing fluid and bleeding the brakes twice. Must stop buying shiny toys....

Right, finished the job evenings last week and its all done and test driven.
Car is now perfect, and the handbrake has never been so quiet. Calliper was stuck and pads and disk we "messed up" by the wear. Other side was fine, bit everything all replaced in matching pairs and its so much better.
Thanks for the support and the ever useful "brake bible" Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Propshaft repair is an easy fix if it is just the rubber that’s shot - it took me longer to get the car on stands and stable than to take it off.
The Sika flex takes a while to set so would plan to leave it stood for 24 hours or a bit more with the prop off before putting it back on Must stop buying shiny toys....
