Power button, to turn it on and off.
As for what 'it' is, I'm not a details bloke, somebody else might know, but as it's not at all a factory fitment you've going to have to trace the wires behind it back to what they are connected to.
Or, just be brave and push it!Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

After market fitted, pull the panel down and see where the wires go?

Press it whilst someone stands in front of the car - if the number plates rotate and guns pop out of the headlights the car must have had a government department as a previous owner if not perhaps it’s the button to turn on spotlights Must stop buying shiny toys....

Apart from the above I Wonder if that’s for one of those plug in tuning box as they use a similar button
It might be tucked under one of the battery covers

STRANGE BUTTON
Hello all,
Many thanks to The Wojtek, Nasher, kirkeyworld, darrind and gstuart for taking the time and trouble to reply.
I have tried the button with the ignition on, off andwith the engine running but could not see any effect. I have pulled the panel down and saw that the wiring seemed correct but it disappeared into the back of the dashboard to goodness only knows where. Still, as long as it does not seem to affect anything I think that I will just leave it alone.
Thank you also to rrhool for suggesting that it is a passenger eject button. If it is it does not work as SWMBO is still in situ.
Thanks again,
JTR

Hi
It might be worth checking for Spotlight wiring behind the grill, my old D3 had an odd button fitted to the dash and I eventually found a set of cables tucked up behind the grill that were for a pair of lights that must have been removed by the previous owner.Must stop buying shiny toys....
Whilst extra lamps is most likely, isn't it a tad awkward position wise ? unless it was a work-lamp at the rear ?.

Hello darrind and Hardware,
Thanks for the ideas.
I will investigate behind the grill.
Failing thatI will get my local LR specialist to have a go.
