Hi Chaps,
Bit of a strange one this, maybe someone has come across this before and maybe someone can advise on the best thing to do.
It's a bit of a story so strap in!
About a year ago I bought a 2014 D4 that was Cat.D which had previously been stolen and recovered some years earlier.
It's a good car, nowt wrong with it and came with 2 keys.
A few weeks afterwards, I decided to check that the spare key worked. That's when I found out that is didn't have a battery in it. New battery, still no worky. Ok, thought I, I'll get it programmed at some point.
Fast forward to this week. Had to take my car in to my local indy, so asked him to pair the spare key for me while he had it. Now this is where it gets interesting...
When I got in the car with both keys, the car said 'Smart Key Not Found'. I didn't twig at first so changed the battery in my good key, went back and got the same message. This is when I twigged. So I placed the non-working key outside the car, got back in and everything was ok, started the car and then retrieved the other key. Once in the car again with both keys, the 'smart key not found' message popped up again but the engine remained running so I just drove off to the garage. I mentioned this incident to him when I handed everything over.
Picked the car up today, he hadn't been able to pair the spare key. Not only that, the car doesn't recognise the key that actually works! When logged into the system the car cannot see any keys present. My indy reckons it has something to do with how the thieves stole the car.
So, I still only have the one key that unlocks and starts the car but it seems a bit iffy. This key doesn't have a blade in it either. I only found this out when I changed the fob battery the other day so I'll be stuffed if I get a flat battery. Just checked the blade in the non-working key and that doesn't fit the car so God knows where that's come from!
So, I have 2 keys, only one works (somehow), and no blades. What are my best (i.e. cheapest) options to be able to have 2 working keys with working blades? Back in the game!

probably new locks and keys that match, but sit down when they quote you. It will most likely be main dealer only as well as ordinary diagnostics cannot get into the ECU deep enough to make it work. the thieves have most likely cloned the original and then programmed their own new keys something for which you need the original key that works . It is not possible to program two new keys without this .

^^^ I'm not sure this is 100% accurate - a GAP IID will be able to create you a new key or 2 as long as you have 1 working key ... I know as i've done it multiple times Stolen - D4 Loire Blue

The Autel AP 200 will code blank new keys, at least mine will. Not sure about the new versions.

Is it worth contacting the seller about the key issue . May have given you wrong key, have the blade there? Also , should the OP be concerned about who else may have keys?
I know the IID has a facility to tell you how many keys there are programmed for the car ( but never used it) , would that be useful to know in this situation?
Good luck sorting
Cheers Gary

Could be an issue with the revision of software in the vehicle and the device they are using to program the key, an IID might be able to get the process to work but a more generic device like a Snap On might not.. Must stop buying shiny toys....

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Regarding contacting the seller, I already did that months ago when I found that the spare key didn't work. He said that he got the 2 keys with the car and had never used the spare.
I reckon I need a passenger door lock with working key blade (to copy) so that I can get in the car if the battery dies.
Then I'll take it to a key coding specialist I think. I just hope that I don't end up with NO working key at all!
Does anyone know who might supply a used lock set with matching key?
Cheers Back in the game!
