That's helpful thanks. I'll look at my options and update this post when I get a fix.

Update

After some testing of pressures etc. my local specialist has concluded that the oil pump is failing so I am awaiting for that to be replaced. I believe that it is quite a strip down to get at the pump so is it worthwhile getting anything else replaced at the same time (the cam/aux belts were renewed 6k miles ago)?

It's not too much of a stripdown, and would have only been another 30 mins labour, £120 parts, when the CAM belts were done 6k miles ago which is a shame to hear as most LR garages would recommend doing the oil pump whilst you are there.

Depending on mileage the waterpump could be replaced? Nothing else really to get at the front of the engine. Wherever you take it to, make sure that they properly lock the flywheel with the proper tool, and not use white pen and eyeball it, as if the timing is out by even a couple degrees, you will soon have a very large paperweight.

The cam/aux belts were replaced by Sytner LR Coventry and they never mentioned the oil pump. A shame as you say but I haven't been impressed with their service. They changed the cam belts and updated the service record to show that they had only changed the ancillary belt. I then discovered that they had not changed the ancillary belt but had done the cam belts so the car had to return for the ancillary belt to be done. It then took me months to get them to update the service history to show that all of the belts had been done. Terrible service!
Is it a big job to replace the water pump if it were to fail in the future?

Small job of about an hour to fit a new one then replenish the lost coolant and bleed the system.

Got the car back today after fitting of a new oil pump. Done about 60 miles today and oil light has stayed off so hopefully the pump was the fault. Apparently on idle the dealer could only get pressure of 5 psi but the new pump is showing 12 psi. The dealer said that on my car (MY16) the oil pump is 'smart' and lowers the pressure on idle but they couldn't measure the pressure when driving. Searching on this site references a gen 1 and gen 2 pump with a dump valve (whatever that means). Is the dealer correct and is 12 psi about right? The new oil pump is LR096231LR.

Yes Gen2 pumps have an oil dump valve to reduce oil pressure (to increase efficiency). 12psi is much better, but it is hard to tell if any damage has taken place prior. I'd be doing an oil change and oil filter, inspecting the oil filter for anything shiny to be on the safe side.

I'm glad you have caught it early as things could have gone much worse!
