Fuel filter does not fit

I have replaced the fuel filter umpteen times on various D4s but was defeated today as I could not get the new filter to fit.

The existing and new filters had the same numbers and markings on them and the same LR part number, both made in the USA for some reason - both genuine Land Rover. However, the new filter would not fit onto the central connection in the housing. I also noticed that the tabs for retaining the filter were in a different place, but that would not have stopped it fitting.

On closer inspection, the central connection appears different: same diameter but the older filter has a central pipe that is longer and flush with the top of the filter. The old filter fitted back on straight away.

The photo shows the two filters; the old one on the right. Not easy to see but the older central connection is flush with the top of the filter but the new one is sunk into the hole. I also noted that the filter bowl is more bowl shaped and slightly deeper.

did you remove the original centre o ring. You wouldnt be the first not to and then the filter wont push up far enough to engage

Yes, I removed and replaced the o-rings (been there in the past!!). Here is a better photo of the new filter showing the central connection. On the old filter, it was flush, this one is recessed. It may just be a manufacturing fault, but with the difference in bowl shape and the different position of the three retaining tabs, I am slightly suspicious. I have ordered a new one from a trusted supplier to compare. Will then update here.

Must admit the last one I did ,I had to put quite a bit of pressure on to get it high enough to turn it and lock it.

They can be tight, you need to put some grease on the center bit and on the housing tabs.

The old one turned ok and I smeared some diesel on the central o-ring of the new one. I also smeared some silicone on the slides where the tabs rotated but I could not get the filter to slide up onto the central connection because it did not fit. I decided foul language and refitting the old filter would be best until a new filter arrives from a trusted source.

I ordered two new filters from a reputable supplier. Both identical in every way. When I compared them to the one that I could not get to fit onto the central boss in the filter housing, I noticed the following:

1. The shape of the bowl very slightly different
2. The central boss fitting in definitely deeper on the one that would not fit
3. The manufacturers stamps on the top of the filter were noticeably different: they said the same thing, but the style and quality of printing is different
4. The position of the tabs that retain the filter in the housing are in a different place in relation to the padlock symbols.

These all seem minor details, but there is something not right.

As ever, it pays to stick with trusted suppliers which I generally do, but got caught out here with an internet 'bargain'.

I sometimes buy service parts from ebay ,as you often see main dealers flogging out stock but you need to be careful.

Based on what you say this looks very much like a fake. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.... It would be interesting to know what the inside looks like.

hi. i just recived my clarcor fuel filter from duckworths. fitting it tomorrow to my 3.0 sd d4 its a my12.
bit concerned now. model no is LR009705G. do you think this will fit ?
