Coding new non a genuine key fobs

Evening all. Ive purchased 2 x new 3 button key fobs off fleabay as my key stopped working and I didn't like the stealer price for new key. Ive had a new lock set fit, ignition, passanger door and two new blades by a specialist landrover garage. My mechanic has said that the new keys won't code for some reason. Ive been in touch with the eBay seller who says he has had no trouble with keys he has sold previously. The keys wernt cheap cheap ones and are from a reputable seller. Ive had to order a genuine key off landrover to get me back up and running which I'm not too happy about. My question is is there anyone local to me that has key coding equipment that can help me out with trying to code the other keys. My mechanic uses auto logic diagnostics which he says he's never had an issue when coding genuine keys. Has anyone had any experience coding non gen keys or can someone offer any advice. Thanks in advance. Gaz

Hi,

And good luck with this.

I could be wrong, but I read some other stuff here at the forum that suggested the dealers needs at least one working key in order to code new keys.

Without a working key, a VIN matched preprogrammed key needs to be ordered from LR.

Once you have that key, then you can add the others with whatever diagnostic tool you have; I added one using my IIDTool, but even then a working key is needed first.

This could all be nonesense, but that’s what I’d read I’m sure.

You could try asking a dealer if they can code the keys for you if you don’t have w working one and see what they say

The key I have will start the car so I assume the imobiliser part still works, it just won't open the car. I'm assuming the battery has died. He's ordered me a genuine key which should be here Friday so we will see if that works when he tries to code it. I just thought if there was a way to code the other non gen keys I have I could get them coded then I'd have 3 keys instead of the one. If not I'll just have to save some more pennies and order another from the stealer. Thumbs Up

Search the forum for "3 wire splice".
Your key fob might be working but it's the car that doesn't see it. Wink

Yeah I've read about the splice. The problem I had was my emergency entry lock was bust so I've had to break the window to get in. Ive had new locks fitted so I can get into the car if it happens again. I thought while I was on with it if get a new key as mine wasn't working. If the new remote doesn't cure the problem the splice is my next port of call. Landrovers, you've got to love em! Lol

Would it not be worth getting a diag tool yourself?

May help to work out what’s going on.

So if you get a VIN coded key it will work straight away with the car but any previous keys will also work? The re-coding process is needed to erase existing ones or pair a new virgin key?
